rear leaf TSB ?

so....stopped by my dealer today. We talked about my truck bottoming out and the crappy ride when it is loaded. He looked and of course found that the TSB still doesn't apply to the 2012. He set up an appointment for me to bring it in. They want to do a full check on it. I kind of got the impression that he knew what the issue was but didn't want to commit to being allowed to put the 4 leaf packs on. Either way, we shall see if this stays at dealer level or if I have to elevate it.

 

Has anybody else gone in for the TSB with air bags on?

 

I have an 800LB ATV that I put in my truck. I got the TSB hoping it would fix the bottoming out issue. It doesn't sag as much when loaded but its almost as bad in regards to bottoming out on dips just on the highway. I'm most definitely going to buy some air bags.

 

Dealership looked at mine today..... or said they did and lied. The service parts manager started the conversation with "Their isn't anything I can do for you". Didn't seem like a great lead in. He then told me that the springs on a 2012 are different and don't have the same problems as the earlier models. So I asked why some of the trucks on the lot have 4 leafs and some have 3 leafs..... no answer. He told me he got in the bed and jumped up and down to test mine. I just shook my head..... I have a bed cover on it..... so unless he removed it (he didn't) he did NOT jump up and down in the bed. I told him I was aware that the tsb didn't really apply, but it was the same issue as the earlier models. I also told him I was aware that some folks with 2012's had gotten approval from someone at Toyota to have the new leafs installed. His answer..... "I don't have a regional Toyota person right now. He was promoted and I have no one to call" Doubtful, but I am not going to call him a liar to his face.

So we chatted a bit more, I stayed very calm, used a little tact, and he did finally relent. He is looking to see if he can put the 4 leaf packs on. He said he will do the research and call me when he knows what they can do. I will give him this opportunity before I start calling and annoying Toyota about it.

get a case number for your complaint...

have case number and your info emailed to dealership of your choice...

get new rear springs...

(it worked for me)

 

Thats the next step, I just wanted to give the dealership the opportunity to get it right.

Just got off the phone with Toyota. Got a case number with no resolution.

my 3 leaf OR bottoms out with ~100lbs in the back and running over a pencil.

 

I don't get why some are having issues with bottoming and some do not (me). I have 2012 Prerunner SR5 with the 3 leaf pack. I have loaded it with up to ~ 700 lbs in the bed and have not bottomed out. There is no marring on the bump stops or frame. Only guess I could make is that some have updated springs and some do not.

most American Tacoma buyers are buying a grocery getter...an SUV with an open bed...something to haul the bicycles or a few bags of mulch, so Toyota equips them to serve that market.

Most of the rest of the world...the Tacoma 6 lugger is like an F250, so they come stock with the 4-leaf rear.

I had the TSB 4-leaf rear installed, and my Tacoma performs as well with truck duty as any other truck I have ever owned, and I've owned plenty.

 

All toyota leafs suck balls TSB or the 3 pack.

My old 3 pack was better than the TSB 4 pack which replaced it.

Towed my boat 4 times and they are pretty much flat already.

My tow largest problems with the truck is the rear leafs/axle wrap and all the vibes it causes and a close second is the rust my truck has on the frame. The paint has pretty much vanished that was on it.

What's your tongue weight of your boat and trailer? Had the TSB done 2 years ago. Towed 4000 pound trailer across country (2500 miles). The tongue weight was 450lbs (I have a tongue scale to balance the load.) I tow all the time. The truck gets about 10 MPG while towing but it never sags...ever.

 

My best guess is about 350 pounds. Have trailered a decent amount in my time. Trailer sits nice and level and no added weight in cabin of boat. Towed for years in my other trucks and never even had a leaf problem, get into this tacoma and they are pretty much poorly tempered/heat treated pieces of scrap steel we ride around on.

It does not bottom out ever but my TSB leafs are now flat after towing 4 times.

I might throw back in my non tsb springs and see how they do but that is more work again. Will likely combine them into a 6 pack until they all get flat and then get some real springs.

I get about 12-13 towing. Boat is 3000 pounds and then the trailer weight.

 

The thread is still going on, so thought I'd address a few of the earlier comments. As others have said, it appears the 2012 TRD Sport is getting the four (4) leaf pack while the 2012 TRD OR is getting the three (3) leaf pack. With the latter, I suspect it's intended to reduce bounce while driving off-road.

Oh, we know how to count. Or at least I do. On my 2012 TRD Off-Road, I have two longer ones and another shorter than the width of the tire = three. None of the TRD Off-Roads I've seen in the showroom had four. The two larger leafs have a wide gap between them, which you might have simply mistook for another leaf.

 

Looks like we are towing the about the same weight with the same equipment but are getting different results. Sorry about your trouble. I hear Dakar springs are excellent.

 

sounds like some in this thread need to trade their Tacoma for an F-250 and be done with it.

I've has a few Ford F-150's...all were good trucks. Most of my trucks have been full size Chevy/GMC's.

I am very happy with my Tacoma.

If the next gen appeals to me I may trade, otherwise I may keep this truck forever...it will probably out live me.

plus, I'm old and need to stop wastin' coins on trucks.

plus I want a new Hewes skiff.
