Can you register 2 sets of TPMS sensors?

Looks like I'm going to wind up with 2 complete sets of wheels/tires, one for humdrum and one for offroading. I've got the tpms sensors on my everyday wheels, should I buy a set for the offroad wheels? Brand new 2012 DCSB.

I don't want to be looking at a flashing light for a week while I'm off in the sticks. Can you even register 2 sets of sensors? Does anyone have a *temporary* mod to turn off the idiot light on a 2012?

I do not think it will accept two sets... Even if it did it would be looking for all eight and it would flash as four would be missing.

    Mute Point.

I think all you'll need to do is hit the reset button after you swap wheels.

The reset button only works when rotating the tires. If you are replacing sensors you have to write he I.D's to through the OBDII port. You would have to write the I.D's everytime you swapped the wheels out if you plan to have a set of sensors per each set of wheels.

Correct. The TPM system will only record 4 sensors at a time.

IIRC, the reset button is only to reset the psi at which the tires will trigger. there is no need to reset the tpms after a rotation due to the fact that the sensors are not dependent upon which tire they reside.

and for the OP, the tpms should only hold a max of 5 sensors since the 06-08s had all 4 + the spare in it. and that's if they used the same main tpms unit going forward.

I run two sets of tires, my commuters have the TPMS & my off roads don't.
Not a big deal the light stops blinking after a while and stays solid.
Even before I got the second set when I aired down to off road the light would come on.

I question this statement. I am not sure, since I do not have a late model Tacoma with a TPM system. Do the Tacomas only have a warning light, or do some of the newer ones have a warning system that tells you a specific tire is low (i.e. General Motors) where you get a message saying "left front tire 32psi"
If it gives a specific tire warning, then you do want to reset or "relearn" the positions after a tire rotation so that the correct position is learned.

My 2011 just has the ( ! ) symbol for low tire psi. Doesn't tell you which one though.

Just tells you one is low. Threw my dad off for weeks as he kept getting the warning on his dash but his tires were all in spec. TPMS in spare was throwing the light on the dash.

I see it's already been answered. My 07 and my 09 were the same way, except they dropped the spare from having a sensor. No specifics on which is low though.

Thanks guys, 4Wheelin4Banger had the solution I needed: "Not a big deal the light stops blinking after a while and stays solid." That makes me feel a lot better. No need to buy a whole other set of TPMS sensors and certainly not re-register every time I change tires.

BamaToy1997, your sig is HIGHLY distracting. Moar!

Even with the system having only a tell tell light the ECU does know which location the each sensor I.D is written to. So it is important to relearn the system after rotation. This is a copy of the relearn procedure for 05-10 trucks 11-12 I believe are still the same. But this is as high as my current TIA guide list.

The TPMS control unit is just matching the incoming signals to what it has in it's memory, then setting off the alarm if it receives a lower pressure than what it's been set to. It doesnt care which tire is where. If it needed a specific signal from a specific tire area, the TPMS in a can fix wouldnt work. I would hope to think that if Toyota incorporated the directionality into the TPMS for the Tacoma, they would provide a way to display that or get it to the driver. They may copy that statement out of other models into the Tacoma book.

If the TPMS control unit has the ability to tell the difference if which is where, but has no way to get that to the driver, what would it matter? The light will still go off when the pressure in that tire goes below what it's set to. It sets a pressure to a specific sensor ID#. It doesn't poll for a sensor in a set area. If you are doing a rotation and using different pressures front/back, you should change the pressures accordingly and reset the TPMS control unit to make the sensor aware of the new pressure, that's it. It has nothing to do with which sensor is where as far as location on the truck. It purely cares about ID# to a set pressure.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
No where in the FSM TPMS registration procedure does it indicate that the IDs are associated to location.

dont question it. it is correct. there are some members here that have the TPMS sensors mounted in a pressured PVC canister to "simulate" a properly inflated tire. this is because their aftermarket wheels dont accommodate the sensor, and the constant "ON" warning light will make them crazy. the sensors are not in a specific location..they just detect the either 4 or five (some include the spare) tires in the vicinity and monitor the pressure.
