Saw my first HDR photos today and I really liked them.

Where is the best place to learn how to do this type photography & what specialized equipment would I need ??

    Thanks ... :D

you need three images one under exposed, one normal exposure, and one over-exposed (you can do more than 3 images). The goal is to not have a "halo" around the image, but show the dynamic range of the photo. Personally I'm not a fan of the over done HDR images, but I want to try out the built in HDR mode in my D800 as its more of a "true" HDR image

The more images for hdr, the better the dynamic range. Dont limit yourself to just 3, especially for a contrasty scene.

Thanks for the information on the HDR. I think that the photographer (that I talked to on HDR) said you could buy a camera that would internally do an HDR photo with a number of overlaid images.

This photographer was at was at a local outdoor art show and had some large HDR photos printed on 1/8" thick aluminum plate and the colors were surreal & stunning.

Just curious if this is a possibility ... to do perhaps 6 overlaid images inside the camera with maybe internal software. I am a novice at this, but this is how I learn. :D

the 5D Mark III and D800 both do internal HDR images, any camera that can do bracketing can produce the frames need to do a HDR image. You could also use a RAW image to get the various exposures needed to create the HDR image. You are gonna need to some PP software to make it easier.

Photo matrix if you want to do the fancy stuff. Just use Photoshop or light room if you want basic hdr. Light room does a decent job using a single raw image as well.

In camera I believe is 3 shots, but when you DIY in PS or the like you can do more.

this is correct. I was just stating that the more photos you have for an hdr shot, the better your result ;)

    Oh of course!

A quick question regarding HDR, as I have only done the bracketing in camera, if I were to do it manually I should only adjust the shutter speed correct?

Most do it that way.... in theory you could do it with aperture though.... or even ISO. Its all considered a 'stop'

More light in... less light in. By using shutter you're maintaining the same depth of field and film grain. Sometimes you'll find yourself hand holding and the shutter speed will get too slow. Upping the aperture or ISO could help you avoid that.

When putting the shot together though wouldn't the different depth of field look weird though? I can see doing it with ISO as long as your not going to high.

If I do ever hand hold it i will probably just use the bracketing in camera to eliminate moving the frame ever so slightly.

With HDR, you really want to maintain aperture and use a tripod. One to maintain depth of field and the other to keep the composition consistent.
