Picked up my new '08 Tacoma 4x4 TRD access cab w/V6 auto. Stupidly, since I drove it off the lot, I've been driving in 4th gear, rather then the "D'' position to the right. Major brain-fart. Speeds include city and interstate; 75mph. RPMS never exceeded 3000 or if they did it was brief. Mileage now is 550. Have I damaged my transmission?

Thanks for the reassurance. I've never used a website such as this so its nice to know answers are quick. Time to reverse my cranial inversion and pay attention to my drive selection! Thanks again

Look in the manual, I believe you put it in 4th when towing, so no big deal.

I checked my manual today so I'm ok. Thanks for taking the time and effort to reply. This is my first experience in a website like this....pretty cool!

I did this one day by accident.

I was driving home from work, the second day with the truck. I just wanted to see if downshifting could slow down the truck so I shifted the auto to the left and came to a stop.

Then, played with the radio and forgot to put it into drive. Well, I entered the freeway and listened to the radio oblivious to anything.

Turned off the radio and noticed that the truck was revving a little high and looked at the instruments and saw that I wasn't in drive!

I drove about 7 miles that way.:(

As a matter of fact, my wife runs in the city in the 3rd gear position and only puts it in drive "D" when an the highway. She drives a Subaru and gets pretty good milage and performance, maybe do a test and see ? a week in drive and a week in 4th.

Don't feel bad man, I did it for two solid months myself. Just found "D" the other day, 800-1K decrease in RPM's at highway speeds. Big brain fart on my end too. Now the truck isn't as response as it was but I know I am getting better gas mileage and if I do need the extra power just slide her to the left. :)

EDIT: I went from a put up wet and rode too hard 1993 Jeep Cherokee I had been driving for the past 4 years to this new 08 expensive, Tacoma. I was concentrating on just keeping her between the lines there for a while, having to adjust my strategy for parking and the in general feeling of "please don't bump my new truck".

    Nope, it's tatered.

Dude, I drive around in 4 all the time. We have a lot of hills, throttle response is better, tranny searches less, plus I get to listen to my intake and exhaust.

No worries. I'd add that it was probably BETTER for your engine at break-in, but we'd be picking fly shit out of the pepper....

None. Stock with options - Roof rack, running boards, hood scoop, etc.

I did the exact same thing when I got my truck. I went from Columbia, SC to Charleston doing over 100mph in 4th.

    Truck still works great!
