    4.10 gears, sliders, and lots of buttons.
    I disagree. We have 2 Dodge cummins RAM's, both diesel, one a 6 speed manual, the other a 6 speed auto. Mind the Auto has the 6.7 engine, with the 6 speed manual having the 5.9. That being said, the auto tows very nice! For the towing I have done in the Tacoma, I find the auto, once again, better than the manual. Just MHO>

    VERY nice thread! I'm learning alot from it.... In my opinion i like manuals better mostly because i find them more enjoyable and can be faster than an auto when driven correctly. But theres no way im saying that an auto is a piece of crap, alot of people that ive known say that the auto is crap in toyotas, probably the earlier older pickup styled trucks had the crappier autos. Ive had two clutches go out on 2 of the trucks that i didnt really drive to much which sucked, and never had any problems with the autos other than some axle wrap when i shifted in the morning.

    Hmmm.. are you sure about that?
    Haven't seen too many Vettes, 911's or Ferrari's with auto's at the track.

    Drag racing is different. Harder to get a whole lot of power to the rear on a clutch at high rpms with out slipping anyway.

    Thats really early for it do die! I had a 95.5 3rz tacoma with an automatic for a few months and it had 220k miles without any rebuild

    I don't have the time to read the whole thread but has anyone mentioned the lockout torque converter after like 50mph? I know on my 2001 it is great it acts like a manual when it locks and you feel the added torque. This feature sort of makes a manual pointless except at lower speeds.

    Ive never heard of that, but it sounds pretty cool... When you said "it locks", do you mean the the locker automatically engages at speeds 50+?

    yes. Mine engages at about 52mph on accelleration-really nice when coming on freeway speeds. It kicks out when you drop the gas, then whan you start into the gas you can feel it engage again.
    Do you 2nd gens have this too?

    It all depends what you want to do with your truck. They are both good.
    Automatic is great if you want a daily driver that involves sitting in traffic or if you use 4X4 in rock sections or hill climbs occassionally.

    If you want a wide open long travel desert shredder, Manual blows away the automatic! You can control your revs better in cornering and rough sections. Also there is a reason why all the Pro-2 short course trucks are going to manual tranny's now ( Renezedder, Leduc's, etc..) Because in a high speed wide open environment, manual will be an advantage.
    But most people are not racing, so automatic is fine for people who are just having fun

    This is called your torque converter clutch, and all automatics have had this since pretty much the 80s. They have improved on the technology over the years of course. But nothing new, and if you have an automatic, you have this.

    In all autos including cars-or just trucks? I did not know that. But I know my '86 Jimmy did have one in its 700-r4 auto to prove your point:) sure did help that anemic 5.0 a bit.

    For the most part, yes. Pretty much every car or truck had them. It is necessary to keep the heat down, and to allow better MPG.

    Not an issue with Tacomas, otherwise you'd have about a half million 1GRs in the junkyards. The automatic tranny keeps the engine around 1000-1300 rpm unless accelerating at basically any speed under 45 mph once it's warm. It lugs around like a Harley.

    Trick on the manual is to think like an auto. Not accelerating? Get the revs down until it's time to do so.

    I agree with this, my 6 speed Taco feels best at low RPMs driving around town even though it is quiet and smooth enough where I can be at 3000 RPM and not notice...
