I'm going to do a little research for you, there is no reason your clutch disk should have failed like that. I'll post some info when/if I find it.

Hey bud I used to be a mechanic at a local dealership.... there is a law called the Lemon Law and your truck may be covered under it.... also raise hell.... there is no way even if you abused the hell outta it that that shoulda happened within the first 20,000 miles.... I would call Toyota Corporate and raise hell.... cause lets say u take it apart and repair it... then if something in the trans goes bad that would normally be covered they arent going to cover it because a certified mechanic didnt work on it... and they would say that you did something to mess it up... if I were you I would raise hell to the dealership and to the corporate rep cause there is no way that, that should have happened so soon...

Lemon law requires several unsuccessful attempts to fix a continuing problem or problems, this is a one time issue so that wouldn't apply. I'm surprised they told you it was ok to tear it down yourself if there was some warranty question, but hopefully that won't be a factor.

Looks like there could be some discoloring on the flywheel but hard to tell from the pic. Odd for the clutch disc to separate like that and unfortunately the disc is a wear and tear item. They might still help you out if they think it looks like a parts failure, wear and tear really refers to the clutch disc lining, the hub doesn't usually break loose.

You might try negotiating just for free parts since you have it torn down already, wouldn't cost them very much to make a customer happy that way.

Sounds identical to what you described.

And a handful of other people complaining about the same issue of the hub seperating...

Pics are not horrible, there is not a sign of abuse. You have alot of your disc left and what I can see on your flywheel looks clean. bad angle on that photo but I can't see a hot spot. You need to recontact your dealer. If that vehicle was in my shop I would finding out why that happened.

If you take a good look at the picture of his clutch disk you can see how the hub has separated from the outer portion of the disk (notice uneven areas around hub). The picture just confirms what he had stated about the clutch disk 'free wheeling' around the center hub of the disk. Apparently this is fairly common occurrence with the 6spd and is well documented on the net.

Well this has been a learning experience for me, interesting to guess what's going on and then actually get to see it a short time later, especially since I have a 6 speed.

I wonder if it's common under normal driving conditions or do the failures occur with harder use?

Well shit, this makes me a little worried as I also have a brand new (under 1k miles) 6speed manual.

    Check out my post #68.

Apparently it has occurred with little to no abuse and at very early mileage. On the Edmund's site (second link) a guy reported having what appeared to be this same issue at around 200 miles, as in two hundred:eek:. From what I read in the last two hours researching this topic there are quite a few issues with the 6spd.

Hey sorry to hear that this happened to your clutch. It's a shame that the dealer didn't just tear it down and inspect/find it while it was in their shop. They coulda just done checked it and if they found abuse,,, they coulda just pushed the truck back onto the trailer and then you coulda fixed it yourself.

I think that when you show them the disk, they are gonna take care of it. They should have you bring the whole truck back and put it together for you just for your troubles man.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I hope you get this in time, but don't talk to the service manager. At this point, this situation has escalated to the manager of the Service dept. Advisors are secretaries to the bigger boss. If you don't get the answer you want, politely ask for the manager of the dealership. If that doesn't work, ask for the owners information. If that doesn't work, take you business to another dealership. Don't forget to call the toll free corporate number and state your case. Don't get run down. Document who you spoke with and what time and in what order. Details are critical when you speak to someone in corporate. Good luck.

X2. I'm of the opinion they need to have you bring it ALL in and have them put on a new pressure plate and re-assemble the whole thing. At no charge.

As a technician I wouldnt want to touch something a customer took apart. sucks that they didnt just cover it from the get go, but if they did find abuse then you wouldve had to pay the labor for disassembly if you still wanted to do it yourself, thats probably why they quoted you from the get go, worst case scenario. I can see why people want to dig into dealers but honestly they will try to work with customers to promote future business, the worst thing you can do is go in and act like a rude know it all, because in the end they can just boot you and your truck out to someone else. Be respectful and stern and hope they goodwill it for you
