So which frame are you using? I think the corsaro would be much better. I did about 3 minutes of research and the magna frame and front forks need to be tossed. If the derailleurs and brakes are in better shape on the magna pull them off and put them on the corsaro. I dunno though, it appears that the magna is just the cheapest of cheap, kind of along the lines of the NEXT full suspension bikes from Walmart.

If it gets you riding then by all means cobble it together and get out there. But in my opinion this should be something to hold you over for a couple months until you find a decent used mountain bike that will hold up to the abuse you're gonna throw at it.

And Chang Star? That's a hilariously bad name for a product.

Im gonna keep doing my research for a bike thatll be good for me.

Lol yeah i was like lolwat when i saw the name stamped on the parts.

My first thing is always that any bike that gets you out riding is okay. That being said, don't spend a lot on repairs. Go ahead and keep it going, but that isn't an "upgradable" frame. No offense intended, just that the amount you will spend on parts will go a long way towards buying something a little more trail-worthy. But like I said, I've always been of the belief that while some bikes are better than others, even the world's worst bike is a good bike if it means you get out and ride!

I found that with the switch to the 29'er, it does seem to get over obstacles a little better, which makes sense. I also went from a 26" hardtail to a 29'er FS, so there were a lot of differences. But if I were to be honest, I'd say the difference in wheel size was more like "Hey, cool" than "Oh my god! I like TOTALLY rode over that Honda without even feeling it!" I have noticed it is a little tighter feeling on switch backs and hard corners. Honestly, I think the difference is probably the same as going from a Big Bertha golf club to a Super Big Bertha. And the same as the golf clubs, I think the better the rider you are, the less the difference.

26" will be around for a while, partly because there isn't a huge difference, and also because there are a LOT more 26" rides out there, and people who replace their bikes only when they break. They announced the death of the hardtail about 8 or so years ago, and we've seen that's not going anywhere anytime soon. At this point, I think 29'er is at the tail end of being an alternative as opposed to a standard, maybe the beginning of being "another standard". But I don't think we'll see guys even five years from now buying questionable tubes from guys in trench coats in the back ally because they can't find them at the local shop. That and the fact that 99% of department stores still don't carry the 29'er tells me you're fine on a 26" ride.

    haha no offense taken.
Yeah im not going to spend any money on this, like i said in a previous post this bike is only there till i can afford a good bike.
Ive only spent 40 bucks so far, tires/innertubes/brake pads/my old mountain bike.
Im using parts i have laying around.

Just swapped out the tiny plastic pedals with some pedals off a Haro bmx bike i was given awhile back.

Nah, they make sense for guys over 6'2", but otherwise both sizes have pros and cons. Besides everyone knows the 650b is gonna catch fire and totally wipe out 29ers and 26ers LOL

OK guys, a buddy of mine got into racing, and it has re sparked my interest in riding, but I don't know bikes very well anymore, so I need some help.

I want to do some downhill riding, I'll hit the ski hills, and want to be able to hit a descent jump, 20 feet or so. I don't want a complete downhill bike, because I want to be able to to some cross country style riding from time to time.

I was thinking like a specialized Demo 7? I want to stay away from triple clamp forks as well. can you give me some ideas? I am going to buy used, and would like to keep it cheap, under $1000. thanks!

i would check out pinkbike.com for an all mountain bike. something like a specialized enduro, transition covert, santa cruz nomad or heckler, rocky mountain slayer stuff like that. you might not be able to find these for 1000 except for maybe an older enduro. but these are definitely the types of bikes i would recommend you try and find if you want to do some XC

you could definitely get a demo 7 but your not gonna want to ride that doing anything close to XC. its going to be too "squishy" haha my friend rode a trek session 9.9 and he said it sucked to pedal. it was something he wouldn't want unless it was strictly a shuttle or lift ride. im sure you would get the same feeling on other DH bikes too.

hmm, I'd rather it be a nice downhill ride, I can ride the spin bike at the gym haha.
so scratch the xc part... is a demo7 a downhill bike? oh and I'm all over pinkbike checking things out.

    Norco six one any good?

I think a slopestyle bike is more like what I want, I like the transition bottle rocket

haha alright. yeah a demo 7 is a downhill bike. im not really sure about what DH bikes you could find easily for 1000. i know kona stinky's go for around that everywhere. i hear that they are good for the price. hopefully somebody who knows more about DH bikes will chime in.

edit: yeah you probably want like a freeride bike 180mm of travel single crown fork

yea definitely a single crown, I'll keep looking on pinkbike.

    I'm 5'8'', 150-155lbs, a medium should probably fit right? I'm looking at a 2006 giant AC medium for $700

yeah medium sounds about right. if its possible try and get a test ride before anything that way you know it fits and feels comfortable.

I'd look around at the LBS in your hood and see what they sell and ask if they do demos. One of the local places has a rental/demo fleet. You have to pay but that can be applied to a bike should you decide to buy (the cost is pretty reasonable. I wanna say $35).

The good thing about a demo is you can ride it on the trails you like and get an idea for size and fit.

    Yeah.
I have been on the fence for a while on this one, and personally I still like my 26er on the rough and tighter technical stuff. But my Sawyer is a blast to ride with just a 100mm fork on it, and it is much faster through the windy singletrack.

A friend of mine has great skills and big balls (not personally verified) and is only 5'8". He went from a 26 hardtail to a 29 hardtail and is even harder to keep up with, even on the tight technical stuff. He doesn't really care, he'll ride anything, but it didn't make a difference for him.

I think it's really personal preference. I am fortunate enough to have a choice. If I was forced to have one bike, though, with my local trails I would probably go with a FS 29er after seeing what my friend can do on a HT 29er.
