aside from any wiring issues i bet you need to trim the actual antenna to the frequency range that you will be running on average..the mag mount antenna was trimmed 1/4" to be used on average in the race frequency range. i'll get the measurement of the length that i have for my other antenna..the same you have mounted on the bed cage.

what frequency were you testing the SWR on? 146.500mhz would be considered the center frequency. and generally speaking, HAM radios will self-protect itself against high SWR, unlike CB radios.. if your radio has a output indicator everytime you key the mic, you won't see maximum output.

how is the power wire connected, directly to the battery?

what led you to test the SWR in the first place? symptoms of your radio not working properly ?

I was thinking that I would need to trim the antenna, but I was reading that trimming or lengthening is necessary if SWR is higher in the higher frequencies vs the lower frequencies, or vice versa. Mine is ass high on all frequencies, in the red on most.

I was testing the SWR on weatherman and the other channels I normanlly use. It shows maximum output each time I transmit, and the SWR goes to red

The power line is connected to my aux fuse box. I tested the SWR because i dont get nearly as much transmitting distance as Anthony who has the same radio and antenna.

off his bed with a steel bracket.

I am so confused about this one thing:
    - My radio doesnt turn on with your antenna plugged into it, but will turn on with my antenna plugged into it, when hooked up to my truck

    - Your radio doesnt turn on either with your antenna plugged into it, but will turn on with my antenna plugged into it, when hooked up to my truck.

It seems like my wiring only want to work when a radio is plugged up with my antenna

Strange..how is the ground wire..is it mounted properly..securely? Almost sounds like the antenna is acting as the ground. Highly recommend in redoing the main power off the battery terminal itself.

The ground wire is connected to the ground terminals of my blue sea systems aux fuse box.

I too have a feeling that the antenna is doing all the grounding work. I will re-do the posi and neg terminals tonight and see if it makes a difference.

On your antenna wire..the connectors at the end on the radio side..did you solder the connector yourself or did it come ready to go?

I had to solder it myself. I checked the solders on the PL-23whaever connector and they are all still fine.
