OEM rails and Yakima RailGrab Towers

I'm looking to increase my weight for my rack....I found these:

Looks like a good option....but not sure if the Toyota's rails are too wide for this.

Anyone ever done this?

The only thing they will do is give you a wider platform to mount things, like two kayaks laying flat, side by side. Remember, the OEM rack is mostly made of plastic, and is not meant for heavy loads. Also, the weight of the Yakima system (maybe 10 pounds?) subtracts from the amount of weight you can put up there. Of course, this would mean you were strictly following both manufacturers guidelines

 

Thanks...I'm only looking to xport one kayak for now...but I was looking to possibly expand.

The cross bars on the OEM seem way more flimsy than the Yakimas. That's why I was asking....

 

Member Squad314 has those towers on his oem rack. You could look up his build or gallary. He has used them on two tacomas.

I'm doing this today with 78" bars. Plan to haul a Canoe and 2 SUP's.

 

Upgrade to the full rack if you plan on maxing it out.... The factory rack has too much plastic IMHO...

 

I had a Yakima rack with Q-towers before. I'm under the impression that the factory rack with Yakima attachments will be stronger. I have had the Q-tower setup crush the rear cab corners under load when the rubber feet on the Q-towers gave out. Was a costly little issue.

 

Nah...I had the Yakima Q set up on my first gen and it did some damage. I'm thinking with the grab rails up and tight to the front and end pieces of the OEM rail it will be nice and strong.

So, how have the Yakima Railgrabbers worked out so far for you? I might get some to actually USE my front rack instead of just the rack on my ARE cap.
