ya thats pretty good, he def drew one of the random choice drawings. they lowered the tag quota by 20 this year too, from 240 to 220. only a 13% success rate last year tho, only 15 bucks (that was reported at least, so could be more). of those 33% were 2 points, 40% 3 points, 20% 4, and 6.7% 4+. Seems like a decent zone but probably have to put in the time. im sure half the people that draw it dont hunt it, let alone more then two weekends, and only a handful are out there scouting/putting in the time.

But if i were you id make him go and grab a bear tag, from what im reading there are quite a bit up there. shit even have him grab one so u can both bear hunt and deer hunt at teh same time.

Got my peep in today, and damn my groups are looking much better! gonna go out to the range up the street this weekend to get everything all sighted in (Longer distances) shooting a nice solid group at 20 as that is as far as I can shoot at the moment. Cannot wait to shoot longer distances and get everything dialed in so I can go hunt and be confident enough to take a shot when the opportunity arrises! Gonna start saving money for my hunting accessories/gear. :D

just so you know..shooting fieldtips into nice little groups at any distance is just the beginning. crazy things have been known to happen once you twist in a broadhead. my newest bow, i named, "drunken sparrow" because that is how the first broadhead arrow flew. seemed like i could shoot around corners. it took some head beating, and fighting with mathews (i won, thank God i took a picture and saved it)..but i got it to shoot tits..the VP of mathews called me and we talked for hours..i was this close to getting an invitation to hunt some mathews property..hahahha.

my next bow wont be a Mathews.

haha funny. my buddy just went to their plant in WI for some tour thing they do, invite only thing, and they give you a free bow for going.

but bengland, what he said is right, it is a different story with broadheads. but weve been over it before. Luckily, the T3's are just like field tips, at least outt of my assassin. im sure they will be damn close with yours as well, but once you get dialed in up to 50-60, start using the practice blades on those t3's. (WITHOUT the spider clip).

Right now I have 2 hoyts and my wife has 2 as well and they have been very good to us so far. I dont need a new one anytime soon but if I did I would look at hoyt. elite and bowtech. I like some of the things bowtech was doing last time I looked.

i want an ELITE HUNTER or an ATHEN Recluse..now.

but by the time i am ready to buy a new bow..these two would probably be long gone. i love the single cam mathews for their ease of tuning..but it's time to move along now.

the elite hunter (31.5" ata, 7.5 Brace) is DIRT nasty, along with their ANSWER (33.5 ata, 7 brace) the new one to their line this year. buddy just put 80# limbs on his HunTER for the hell of it, and his outta state hunting. fastest ive seen, quiet, and still smooth. bowtech did good with their destroyers, too good, then the invasion cpx as well, but the insanity cpx is dirt nasty too.

the thing i like about elite is their customer service, warranties, and so forth. and just feels amazing in my hands.

im gonna stay away from hoyt. i know they make good bows, and im biased. probably due to all the brand loyal hoyt owners out there that dont open their eyes and try to belittle you if you dont have one. not saying your that way, but the majority i run into are.

aficianado- have you shoot one of the elites yet?

i have not..i know if i fire a HUNTER i will buy it. my mathews is freakin accurate, but i hate how the bowstring seems like it is on the ragged edge of wanting to take off. i know the HUNTER has a much more generous valley. i sacrifice some speed, but fuck speed..i'd rather have accurate and easy to shoot.

i am debated on getting a 60lb bow. (maxes out at 62, i think). i would be able to shoot if forever.

i just hate buying bows. i honestly have killed very little with my current rig and it would be stupid to buy a new bow right now. rather put my $$ into actual hunting.

going to idaho for elk this year..may buy that bear tag you suggested (great idea!)..and then i have a couple of D13 hunts in Socal. i will probably by a rifle tag to kill something.

i need to sell a Weatherby .257 to clear up some new bow money!!

ha ya im sure you will if you do. If your ever up in sonoma county, check out this guy.

    http://www.avidbowhunter.com/AVID_BOWHUNTER/Welcome.html

been hunting with him for some years now. and you can always get some lighter limbs instead of buying a new bow.

Good luck in Idaho too, lucky fuck. haha im moving out to CO next year, so hopefully i can start getting some Muley and Elk hunting in.

Ill be hunting A, B4 and Covelo/Yolla Bolleys area this year. (our Covelo Ranch back up to part of the Yollas)

Thanks for the contact. My buddy lives in Petaluma. You've probably seen him around. Big ass 4x4 sport mobile van. White. I think he uses that shop.

We should hunt lake Sonoma this year.

Yeah i figured, I want to get sighted in with the field tips first and then get the broadheads going. Going to sign up for the range here in Simi Valley so I will have access to shoot up to 150 yrds if I feel like losing arrows haha ;)

What was wrong with the mathhews you had and what made it shoot to off with the broadheads?! thats crazy that it affects flight that much... But wouldve been sweet to go hunt on their land, experience of a lifetime I would think.

Damn thats the kind of tour I would like to go on! sign me up haha

Thats why I chose the T3's, I heard they fly closest to the field tips and also have great cutting and penetration with the mechanical aspect. Plan on using the broadheads with the practice blades and thanks for reminding me not to use the spider clips, Probably wouldve screwed that one up!

I am planning on getting an AO tag shortly here once I have the spare change. Where you live? It would be nice to shoot with someone that has some more experience to help me out if your willing to give me some insight.. sound good???

When you move to colorado, I may have to come visit. Heard the hunting there is pretty good!!

Terrible broadhead flight can happen with any bow. It usually means the bow is out of tune. Due to cam timing, center shot got nocked off and also user applied torque. Other things could be factors as well such as improperly spined arrows etc.

i had the "perfect storm" of issues..first the shop couldnt tune my bow..my centershot was really off..tight up against the riser. my loaded arrow didnt aim in the same direction as my stabilizer..(great quick visual check btw)..the bowshop sent me off with .400" spine arrows..i argued but they insisted. they were my old arrows so it didnt cost me a dime. they didnt time my rest correctly..i had some fletching contact. HERE IS THE KICKER!! mathews strung my bow up wrong..they had the cable running on the outside cable guard roller..so it pulled my idler wheel crooked, which set my centershot way to the inside, which added to the fletching contact, which..SUCKED!!

three shops never caught the cable issue..i noticed it..and sent mathews a photo, and a harshly written letter. now i have .300" spine arrows, and i can shoot out postage stamps at 30 yards with broadheads..

just my confidence is tarnished with this bow..that isnt a good thing..bowhunting is 80% confidence.

GRINCH...i called your buddy. he is gonna let me shoot his 80lb bow..i might buy a HUNTER from him.

Alright, well I guess when I am ready to shoot broadheads I will find out if my bow is out of whack or the arrows are spined incorrectly for my bow...

WOW, I cannot believe that wasnt caught. I would have been furious! glad you got it worked out though!

I Do have a question for you guys though...

I got my peep in and it wasnt bothering me when I was shooting at the shop. I got home and shot a few hours and now the peep seems to have moved or something. It was glued in as well as tied so maybe it just rotated??? idk guys give me thought. Pretty much the issue I am having is that the peep is now more visible while looking through it and I can no longer see my entire sight anymore (All of which were not a problem at the shop).

    Help??

new to this thread but not new to bowhunting. Been shooting and hunting for about 15yrs.

For the peep, do you shoot with a D-loop?

Peep twist is pretty common. Most of the time, you can correct it by slightly twisting the string prior to nocking an arrow. This way it is lined up prior to drawing back. If that doesnt work, a shop can put your bow on a press and reinstall the peep. Usually it is tied in with serving material so it isnt a big deal to remove and re-tie.

ouch..they glued it in? as you shoot and develop your anchor point, you may need to move that peep up or down a tad..

well. what is happening is what they said would if you didnt go home and shoot it 100 times without the peep.

is it rotating bad? if it is just rotating a tad where the circle is more of an ellipse..then:

take your d-loop and rotate it in the same direction the peep is looking at rest..that way when you grab the d-loop, you pull it back and it pulls your peep in alignment. if it is more than this method can handle..your bow needs to be pressed and they need to put in or take out half twist. not a huge deal..
