Doing the midgrade test myself now. Too many stations like to make premium 35 cents more than regular.

So far so good... no sputtering, pinging, or ignition timing insanity + crappy mileage that happens in my truck with 87. Considering the mix is 35% premium 65% regular in my state, it technically should contain a wee bit more energy than 100% premium, slightly less ethanol than regular (they like to spike the 87 around here, one station got in trouble for having so much ethanol that they blew up something like 5 customer's engines in 1 day), and no computer craziness for 10 cents extra... may be a winner.

I didn't think just a little octane bump would help that much though

    hooray for parties

I'm not really sure. I do know that station was shut down for a time until it could be sorted out.

It was up on Alpine in GR and it was the second time it happened at that particular station. I tried to find the news article but it's not on the websites anymore. It was a couple years ago. A lot of people were freaking out about it at the time, that bad enough fuel could ruin an engine like that. If I remember right, the one they had pictures of on our NBC news was a chevy SUV and it didn't make it 2 miles before it broke down.

Really wish I could find one of the old articles on it, but google news gives bupkis today.

Some dealers do "in tank" ethanol blending.
They purchase gas and ethanol and have it decanted according to the math to get 10%.

But (due to government subsidies) ethanol is cheap, so the temptation to spike the ethanol is strong. They may under-report the ethanol percentage in the tanks, or over-report the quantity of new gas purchased to get the ethanol driver to add extra.

Doesn't take long to crank to well beyond the limits.

I'm asking how does it destroy an engine in 2 miles.

Even E-85 won't destroy a non flex fuel engine that fast.

The E-85 might not even get to the engine in 2 miles.

Water might make the motor stop in 2 miles, but not destroy anything.

I'm telling you guys, Chuck Norris' tears would give you 8.3X10^21 MPG and an extra 20 HP. Why only 20? Because Chuck Norris' power comes from 10 fingers attached to his fists and the 10 toes attached to his roundhouse kicking feet.

Thats the reason I wanted an article on it. Like I said, it's been a couple years. The two things I'm sure about are a) the station got hit with a fine for their shenanigans and b) the station was footing the bill for multiple engines that died.

    Enter my conjecture...

E-85 would just go so far out of the map's ranges that I bet it would just stall. They can't do 50% adjustments without the FFV provisions.

If it was not enough alcohol to stall it, the computer would be unsuccessfully trying to compensate for a lean condition. Temps would spike real fast and bam, within minutes you've welded the rings to the sleeves, and melted your cats to boot. It is possible, but unlikely.

I suppose the other question is if E15 can kill a boat motor or motorcycle engine what would say E30 do to a car?

    Exit conjecture....

On another note I haven't heard of other instances on the news since.

There was that tank of gas I got up in Reed City last year that made my car sputter and pop all the way home. It sounded like a hardcore racing cam lope at idle until I refilled. I say it was questionable, but the engine did not die.
