I'm just a touch under 5'8". I don't think height is a deciding factor, except if you're very tall, it'll be easier to find a ride to fit you.

I'm 6'1" and love my 29er. My wife is short and has a 29er as well. All preference and riding style.

this^ ive seen guys like 6" shorter than me going crazy fast on 29ers. It is cross country riding though, i would like to see if someone that size would be able to flick it around on jumps and stuff like that.

what do you guys think of the sx trail as an all mountain bike?
My last bike was a Norco Aline, and for some reason i bottomed out the suspension ALL the time, I'm just nervous that will happen again.

So I just went and test rode the 2012 Stumpjumper FSR EVO. And HOLYSHEET! I dont even want to go ride my Kona now that I have felt what perfection is. I cant wait till I sell my bikes to raise the funds in order to buy one.

    I need more help...

I've decided to go more to a downhill/freeride bike. single crown, descent amount of travel, something I can go big on if I decide, and also rip the ski hills and downhill courses.

I really like the specialized sx trail, but I can't find one in my $1000 price range.
what are some similar bikes to that, so I can look around?

There are quite a few konda stinky's in my price range, are they any good?
    what else?

Have you ever owned or even ridden a Specialized with the FSR suspension? It is very efficient and buttery smooth. Very happy with my last two Specialized bikes.

I have had a few they are nice but after riding other brands specialized's long top tube design felt like it put me over the handle bars more than other bikes. I have owned several.

Yeah my 07 Titus is licenced fSr from Spec and seems relatively inefficient. I use the lockout frequently. Newer Stumps seem much better and the Brain works well.
I got a 2003 SC Bullitt if anyone is interested.

I really like this bike but I have yet to see it in a bike shop. I missed the niner test ride weekend this year. I am sure that I could have got it for a good price then....maybe next year esp with everything I have going on this year so far.
