I just drove a Jeep and....

it was the worst experience of my life, I am so glad i have a tacoma. I thought I was going to die the steering is incredibly loose, to a point that is unsafe, and it didn't really want to go above 50 and didn't like going over 40.

What were you driving? New, old, stock?

 

I've driven my brother's 2010 4-door Sahara many times and I thought the same thing. Something just wrong with the sterring...

i wouldn't classify all Jeeps like that, only poorly lifted ones or people who remove the sway bars because they off road and don't use a quick disco, either that or the steering stabilizer is shot. I have both a lift 04 Wrangler and a Tacoma and they each have their pros and cons. sounds like the one you drove had these issues, probably way to big of tires and very likely needed an alignment as well.

 

it was lifted probably the worst way possible, and it was an 04. It wouldn't go into reverse but the clutch was smooth. I had to push it out of sonic cause reverse wouldn't work. im thinking everything on it was shot, including shocks and coils it bounced and bottomed out, just a nightmare. but not big tires at all.

 

Drive a 2012 , way better

 

i have driven a newer jeep,a friend of my dad's, he had a brand new four door and it rode nice, still nothing like my tacoma. It just feels right to be in a tacoma. also his was automatic and thats no bueno, especially in a jeep

 

I'm not a Jeep fangirl (most people here know I despise Cherokees) but it seems to be an unfair assumption to group it as a Jeep thing. That car is 8 years old and things wear out or break. I'm sure we can find an 04 Tacoma that's been beat that doesn't run perfect.

 

So basically youre experience was with a piece of poop. Maybe go drive one that was done right and come back.

Our (my fiance's and mine) '08 Rubicon is awesome, granted the ride is a little rough but it has a 3 1/2" lift on 35's, and the suspension was made for rock crawling.

 

My buddy has a Grand Cherokee 2012 and its really nice. Rides way better than my Tacoma. But he's had it back in the dealership 4 times now for electrical issues, all different issues. He's only had it 6 months.

 

First I saw the Jeep commercials that bragged they reinvented the quality from the ground-up, now I read all over they have awful reliability scores still? Let down.
I wouldn't mind owning a Jeep hemi.

 

i know the one i drove was exceptionally shitty, but its a good looking jeep, just performs like shit. ill keep my tacoma

 

I'd like a new Rubicon unlimited 6spd manual. Although not really practical for me and I'd only get one if I wanted a second vehicle to set up more aggressively for off roading. I've seen some really awesome looking new lifted unlimited.

 

I'd love to have an old CJ to play around with.

Death rattle - that term is all over the news now with people lifting their Jeeps and not doing it right, resulting in the steering all effed up and causing problems.

 

i have nothing against one that is setup right. but this one was no good. that being said i would have been much happier spending half the money he paid for his jeep on a tacoma. by the time he is done he will have paid 17k for a piece of junk. it just wasn't road worthy. I know of many jeeps that do much better than that, just sharing this one experience.

 

When I go on trips far away, I rent Wranglers when available. Out of the box they are ready to wheel without worrying too much about scratches. The bumpers and wide fender flares are bare plastic. There's steel tube running along the sidesill acting like poor man's sliders. Rented a Rubicon once in Florida in May, and the 4:1 low-range made short work of the steep climbs.

On the highway, throttle response from the old 3.8L V6 sucked. The 4-speed auto sucked: ratios are not appropriate (4th is too tall, 3rd is too short), and the non-gated shifter is inconvenient to shift manually. The upright windshield catches a lot of bugs (not sure if the FJ shares this problem). Wrangler is too hard to live with as a daily driver.
