Ive breifly looked over the service intervals in the manual but i have to admit, my brother does all the maintenance on the truck. It doesnt say to replace the trans fluid at 100k and no where in the services does it say to replace transfer case fluid or front and rear diff fluid under "normal operating conditions" It only says to replace the diff fluid and the transfer case fluid every 15k and 30k miles only if you "drive while towing", i dont tow at all. What does everyone else do?

Many on here do F/R diff and T-Case every 30k. Lots of speculation of when to do the Trans. I am debating doing mine at 60k.

toyota uses world standard life long trans fluid, does not require changeing, you should check it out at 100k to be safe...but have the dealer do it as there is a procedure to get it to correct tempeture.

on the transfercase and diffs I would do them if you use 4wd frequently at 50k or more depending on useage

30K for all diff and transfer case oils. About the transmission fluid change interval. It has been reported that Toyota revised the number to 60K down from 100K, yet I can find no authoritative source to support that. In fact when I search the 2009 owners manual I can find no mention of 100K either. The manual appears mute on the subject, or my search skills are very bad today. :notsure:

Tim, that makes sense. The OP is correct in that nowhere in the 2009 owners manual or the "2009 Scheduled Maintenance guide" does it specify an interval for checking or replacing transmission for normal driving conditions. It's just weird.

    I have a 2009 6 cyl. with auto transmission. I have around 110K miles.

I called 2 dealers and both told me it never needs to be changed. I asked if it was magic fluid and they did not laugh.

I asked to speak to an actual person that works on the trucks. Quote "We do whats called a Drain and fill, like half the fluid is changed" and me being a wise guy said if I do it twice its like getting all new fluid?? They did not laugh.

Can someone please define what "CHANGING the transmission fluid means?" I have read I think every post on transmission fluid changes and have yet to see someone change out the entire fluid on a 2009 or newer truck so far.

I have seen where posters have had dealers flush or drain and fill but never change?

I would assume the only safe way for me to go is one of two options:

    1. Do nothing... as a drain and refill is not draining all the fluid; only half the amount and a flush would not drain all the fluid either and cause particles to get flushed around where they should not be.

    2. Have someone drain the entire fluid, take the pan off, change the filter and then fill while doing the temperature thing a ma jig.

Sadly, no one from Toyota wants to take my money to do this and I don't trust a few guys I spoke with as monitoring the temp. is new to them...

    What to do??

Poor whipper, this is an accumulation of at least 1000 posts worth of info.
I was always told, if you're past 60k just leave it alone because it does more harm than good (FLUSHING not changing) but it doesn't hurt to change the tranny oil at any mileage.

toyota wants u to be far out of warranties (extended included) before u dump the automatic trans fluid and radiator coolant....that way they can wash their hands of "your problem"

    I dumped both around 60k

I did a drain and refill of the transmission fluid at 50k miles and change my diff fluids and x-fer case fluids at 30k mile intervals.

    Thanks Pugga,

Can you define what you mean by drain and refill? The dealer said they "drain and refill but only around half of it comes out"

    How many quarts were used?

I warmed up the truck and transmission, popped the FILL plug (always make sure you can get the fill plug off before you drain any fluid), then pulled the transmission drain plug. I got about 5 quarts out of the transmission and I believe it takes something like 12 - 15 total. I put back the same amount of fluid that I drained and went through the process to make sure I had the correct fluid level. Don't assume that just because you put the same volume back in that was drained that it's all set. Go through the process and check the fluid levels properly. Here's a write up:

And one for a DIY transmission flush if you want to go that route:

I follow this full maintanance schedule. It says replace auto trans fluid at 60k miles or 96k km. Also states to replace both front and rear diff fluid at 40k miles or 64k km.
