I owned a 2005 Ranger & a 2006 Tacoma. Both are excellent trucks but the Ranger will beat the crap out of you 2 or 4 wd compared to the Tacoma. I gave the Ranger to my son

I'm with whipper on this one. Why ask a toyota enthusiast forum as well you already should know the responses. Have you seen some of the other threads? Also why is this in 2nd gen?!

Didn't read any of the 8 pages here, just the OP's post, with that being said if the Ranger suits you I would go for it. I've owned 2 rangers and they were great trucks if you take care of them.

They don't make rangers anymore for a reason you know.

jk if that is what you really want, then go for it.

i had a pretty bad ass ranger back in the late 90's mine was a 1989 regular cab with swampers and a 3 inch lift.

if i can impart one thing to you its that it ran good but, i would not want to take it off road for any sort of abuse at all i tried it a few times and every time i did something broke lol no shit. if you want a truck that at least will get you home at the end of your off road adventures stick with toyota or nissan just my opinion.

Rigid SR 20" LED Light bar, Pelfreybuilt Front Plate Bumper Ordered. Looking at Rear Plate Bumpers now.
I've had both. The Ranger is a POS IMHO. Very cheaply built and VERY outdated. Just buy a low mile 10year old one(same truck).

I come from a family that owns nothing but rangers... still have 87 LoL.

That being said, rangers are cheap for a reason. They're half the size, have half the power, and require overhauls when they hit 100k. Most of ours have all required new tie rod ends, bushings, etc once you hit 100k miles.

That being said, they aren't horrible vehicles by any means, but they do require alot more love. Stick with your taco, get an automatic if it suits you. :)

Well it seems like you've already made your decision. I have a work Ranger single cab i4 and ive never had a problem with it. Drives fine and runs fine. Its just a bare bones truck.
My buddy also has one and he hasn't had any issues either. Whatever you choose, good luck.
I for one, would stick with the Tacoma. Instead of trading it in, why not try a short shift kit or something to see if it.makes it more bareable to drive? There's plenty if aftermarket parts to fix the annoying tsb's. ;)

I have a feeling he's probably not wondering about the Ranger any more. This thread was from February.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Everything goes in 2nd gen, remember?

Yes, they are very hard to ride in for a big person. I've only ridden in one and it was just across town, but was very cramped and uncomfortable. For a smaller person it wouldn't be a problem. I am just too tall for a Ranger, the 2nd gen Tacoma I fit into like a glove, these trucks seem to be built so NBA players can drive them, I haven't been in a vehicle to date that has more leg room up front.

Idk what you (general disambiguation) do to your Rangers but both mine had over 175k miles, and the only problems I had with both was 2 starters and 2 solenoids, nothing major because when either went out I could push the truck and pop the clutch to start it up.

Well, my friend has had a ford ranger for 140000km and he's only put around $10,000 into repairs? And my other friend has 60000km on it and put $8,000 into repairs.
