Thanks everyone for the information. I have been browsing these forums for a while, but did not have any need to make a post until now.

I was not sure if the rust was caused by rocks or faulty paint because only the roof is affected and the Toyotas of my friends and family (all years older than my truck) do not have rust/chip damage on the roof of their vehicles. The sheer number of rust spots I had was alarming. Perhaps the layers of paint on the 08/09 on up is weaker.

I would have taken care of this right away, but want to make sure it is not something that Toyota should cover. They are already not taking responsibility for the melted daytime running light lens, a problem extensively reported on this forum.

I believe I take relatively good care of my truck. I normally wash it once every week or two, and wax it every two to three weeks, and wipe off any bird droppings daily. While waxing it, I pay attention to the feel of the body for any imperfections while also looking for visible flaws. The rust spots either appeared during the month when I skipped out on waxing (end of April to end of May) or perhaps I was not doing as good a job looking for problem spots as I thought :(

Anyone know what the depression is? I tired to take a better picture of it, but cannot get one to show that it is indeed a crater. I had people run their finger over the spot without telling them what they were looking for, and they all said it felt like a small hole with paint over it.

    Thanks again!

Really? On what models/years? I find that odd since they made it so you can't even buy solvent based paint in 2010. Yes you can still get it and spray it in extreme cases like we have done. But it's done with exception not as a norm. I'd be interested to look into which vehicles have these single stage refinishes.

I read a TSB about refinishing certain paints and it seems that Most Non-metallic paints are single stage paint. Here is an answer received by a user on the Tundra Forums from toyota customer service:

Wow thanks for the enlightenment! This is completely new news to me. I wonder what models/years they did this too since the new regulations in 2010.

Furthermore I wonder by they wouldn't have switched over to be greener. They've been dealing with waterborne since the late 90's. Any one have the paint code for the super white and the black with no metallic? I'm curious to see if there is some sort of variant to the paint code with clear coat

That's interesting. I was a little wary of the Super White since I figured it wasn't clearcoated despite what several salesman told me. I always had it in my mind that clearcoated was better than single stage because less maintenance in waxing and polishing. Not that I ever talked to an expert about it, just had that idea fixated on. So after reading this I googled clearcoat vs. single stage and got this, was pretty informative.

I doubt it helps the OP at all, but thought I'd post it.
