Used to be they'd only do mail-in renewal for "good drivers", and even then they'd require a written test and new picture every 8 years.

In the early 80s, they dropped those requirements and just let everyone go by mail.
I got my license in 1979. I didn't step foot into a DMV again until I needed to get a state ID when my license got yanked for DUI in '91, then again to get my license back in '92 (they used the same picture from the ID).
From '79 to '91, I pretty much always had 3-4 tickets showing on my DMV record. I'd get popped for speeding or a bullshit "running a stop sign" about once a year.

So from '79 to '91 my picture was the same... looked like Michael Schenker.
Carried the same picture and again didn't step foot into a DMV from '92 until I got my motorcycle endorsement in 2006.

So in my entire life and well over a million miles I've taken 2-1/2 written tests and one driving test.
Written and driving when I got my license in '79.
Written to get it back after the DUI in '92.
1/2 of the written plus the motorcycle written to get the M1 tag (motorcycle driving test covered by the MSF class) in '06.

    Easy to do...

Ever drive Hwy 395 to Mammoth or Hwy 1 in Nor-Cal?

    65 - 55 - 45 - 35 - 25

In a 2003 Toyota Tundra, if you tap the cruise control "off" as soon as you see the "55 ahead" sign, you'll decel nicely and not need the brakes until you get to the 25 limit at the edge of town.

It's REEEEL easy to hold 70 into the 35 zone until you see the chippie in the grove of trees ;)

70 mph in a 35mph ?? With all due respect you shoulda been given a "timeout" (day in jail) to think about it, unless its a medical emergency, there's no excuse. A 35 zone is most likely busy business district or even some residential areas are 35 & at the speed you were going you were nothing more than a projectile of injury or death if someone were to be in your path,, bad baby, very bad baby !! you got off easy......

Bullshit as in I stopped behind the limit line and from where the cop was hiding he could only see about a foot behind the limit line.... he could not see where my bumper was when I stopped.
I'm wanting to say it was Marquardt and 183rd.... but it was almost 30 years ago. "T" intersection and there was a block fence blocking the approach view.
    Fought it.
    Used pictures.
    Lost.
    Cerritos - Downey court.

Had one that was an unsafe lane change.
Fucker cut me off and I had to swerve to avoid him.
Asshole motorcycle cop wrote me up for the unsafe lane change.
    Fought it.
Judge asked if I used my turn signal before changing lanes.
    Lost.
    Buena Park - Fullerton court.

The rest were for speed. Generally 5-10 over in 40-50 zones. Driving a '69 Camaro and '67 Chevelle has it's disadvantages. Tickets dropped off when I went to a Topaz.

Since the DUI, I've been the subject of a bunch of "profile stops" but haven't been ticketed for anything.
Even had CHP catch me flat out on the 210 at Baldwin doing 80 on my motorcycle and he let me off with a warning.

    Finally got something more current.

Wife isn't too sharp with technology, so I normally operate the camera, meaning there are very few photos of me in existence that I didn't take myself or were taken by a biker friend (I took my avatar photo on I-15 in Idaho while riding to Red Lodge).

But she was forced to use the camera at our daughter's wedding since I was not in a position to be taking pictures until after I gave her away...
