Blend door servo malfunction

Anyone have this problem? '07 4cyl
Had intermittant but persistant 'knocking' coming from dash.
Problem only occurred when the 'recirculator' was activated for the A/C air flow.
Took several trips to the dealer, but problem diagnosed and "blend door servo for A/C is malfunctioning" ( part # 87106-4040 servo sub.assy.D)

A mechanic buddy of mine says this is a bear of a job, as entire dash must be removed. Anyone have any experience with this?

 

Mine does the same thing when you change from reciruclated air to fresh. I traced the noise down behind glove box. I can see the servo change position and it keeps thumping like it doesn't know it is in the correct possition. It just keeps going thump thump thump until I press the button to put back in the other position. Does this sound like the same problem?

 

This happened to me last year. My A/C wouldn't get warmer when I moved the temperature dial. The problem ended up being the servo motor itself. Dealer fixed it because it was under my certified used warranty but would have been around $350.00 if not.

 

Yes dogone that is exactly the situation....and yes $375.00 was the price I was quoted. dealer rep said he would "work with me" and then proceeded to screw up royally handling my service call, so service director took over, kept my truck gave me a free '12 camry loaner and fixed the problem only charging me $169.00 for labor.

 

I wonder if there is a service bulletin on this?

 

Avid, sounds like you made out pretty good minus all your head aches with the dealership. At least you got your problem fixed for half price. I haven't seen a tsb on this problem and I have seached the forum pretty good for the problem we have. Looks like it is just you and me so far.

 

Well, that's ok. At least now it's on record here and anyone with a similar problem in the future can reference the thread.

 

Not just the two of you! I've had this problem since day one on my 03. The dealer could never "duplicate the problem" and now it's out of warranty. I didn't pin point the actual location of the "clicking" until about a year ago.. I might have to fix it myself..

 

Yes, that's what made this problem so difficult. It was not a constant problem. So OF COURSE...when I took it into the dealer it was nice and quiet...My solution was to wait untill it started thumping and then not touch the recirculate button. I had to live with this maddening noise for a few days but it was loud and clear when I brought it in and I called the service manager out of his office to hear it.

By the way, if you have it on record that you brought it in for this problem I would go take that documentation to the service director and make my case for this being repaired under warranty.

That's a good point... I took it in about 4 separate times for the a/c not getting cold, so maybe I still have some paperwork somewhere. The dealer I took it to though is in another state so I'd be surprised if they'll cover it... Won't hurt to try!
Do you remember the cost of the part or how they repaired it though?

 

I don't know how much the part cost because on my invoice it says "no charge" no doubt due to the service rep screwing up. But the total was originally quoted to me as $370.00 and they charged me $169 for labor, so you do the math.
Again as stated earlier, my mechanic friend says that this is a job no mechanic wants to do because it requires taking off the dashboard. As he said to me, 'it's not taking it off that's the problem, it's putting it back on with no squeaks or rattles"
Try and find that paperwork. Warranty work is paid for by Toyota, not the dealership, so if you find it, they may help you get Toyota to ok it.

 

Bump.....anyway of just fixing the arm that opens and closes the door?

 

My understanding is that the problem is that the servo is malfunctioning.
Replacing it seems to be the fix.

 

I have the same problem on my 06 Tacoma Pre Runner. I ended up removing the servo motor. I had read (guess in this forum) someone recommended opening the case (servo) and confirming that gear teeth where not worn - in fact these were damaged in one section (say 4 o'clock location). Guy recommended switching the gear 180 degrees (which sounded like a logical thing) - nah, it seems like some additional problem remains inside of the servo. It is like it does not know when to stop. This motor should have a limited travel only - not sure what stops it. I have been delaying the purchase of the servo worrying that there could be other hidden root cause. In my case I've asked on a Toyota parts dist. and it's around $120.oo. Will need to make the call soon - carbon monoxide is not the best smell when in heavy traffic.

 

I am having this problem. Know it's the blend door. Is there a how to on changing the servo for an 06 double can?

 

Wish there would be an OEM replacement for this servo motor. Has anyone have the resources to do the search?
