EXACTLY! Every time they raise minimum wage they raise the cost of living for everyone. I remember at my old job when I was making $14/hr and that was almost 3x minimum wage. I was doing pretty good then; but now I make a bit more and it feels like a lot less.

everyone when they are young thinks that way. but as you grow older and put your blood sweat and tears in to your career and family you tend to not think that way any more. a famous thinker Winston Churchill (Savior of Great Britain) is quoted in saying
“If you're not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you're not a conservative at forty you have no brain.”

I'm not "that" old; but I remember when $20 would buy a tank of gas. My Dad has an old Ironhead Sportster that we would ride. When we stopped for gas he would give me $5 for gas and a DrPepper. That would fill the tank, get the drink, and bring back a little change.

    That has been a while.

That is problem - min wage was never intended to be a "living wage". If you want to have a nice house, boat, or hot wife with $20k in plastic then you need to get a job that pays MORE than min wage. Today most people seem to be happy flipping burgers for minimum wage and bitching because they can't afford the lifestyles of people who bust their asses off to make more than minimum wage. You want more? Either make your work more valuable or work more. There are no other options.

Stop looking at this from the employees side and start looking at it from the company side of the table.

Say you have a car washing business. You pay a person $7 to man a station at this car wash. You maintain an average amount of daily business to make payroll, pay bills, and pay yourself some too. Now one of the guys on the line does the "math" in his head and figures you are making "too much" off of him and he wants $9/hour to rinse off cars.

Will it be more effective to pay him $9/hour or hire a new person for that spot? How much skill is required to rinse off cars? How long will you have to train a new person at $7/hour? If you do decide to raise his wage to $9/hour can you raise the cost of the car wash $2 to cover your additional salary costs? Will you loose business because of that?

Business pay people what their time is worth to the business; not the person.

I started working at 9 an hour. Then a year later, the company raised the starting wage to 10. That year i busted my ass to get to where i was making 10.50. Now new guys are coming in and making the same amount as me. I can't get another raise for a while because of the system. Let:s just say I ain't happy where I am. The only reason i stay is because of college and some of the guys I work with. And if anyone has a good job opening, I'd love to hear about it

    Damn fucking Commies.

They raised wages so as to get the quality of employees they are looking for in the current economy. Sadly, you are caught on the other end of it where you were hired when they could pay less and get the same quality. It sucks but it is a fact of life. I would have close to the same issue if my company hired me. They FNG would probably be somewhat close to my pay even though I have been with the company for 5 years.

We are both victims of a rising cost of living and minimum wage. The cost of living goes up but our pay checks do not. Welcome to adulthood.

The question is if the company pays the employee more will the company do more? One thing that many MANY people did not realize a couple years ago was that most positions do not pay very much. The bulk of many people's salary was from longevity at a company. I almost felt bad for some of the IT techs in DFW that were refusing to take new jobs paying less than half of their old job until I saw the break down of WHY they were making so much at their old job. Really the new company is just paying what is a reasonable rate for that service.

If the company paid you a $1/hour more how would they benefit?
