1st gen Tundra speakers to 2nd gen Tacoma???

I have a 2011 Tacoma with the non JBL package and installed a kenwood dbl din head unit, it sounds better but still not that great. My grandfather has a 2004 Tundra limited with JBL package, I have been driving it around work a little bit since I work with him. I decided to see what the old yota's were putting out so I turned on the radio and I couldn't even get it to the maximum setting because of how loud the speakers are. Is there any way I can put the Tundras speakers in my Tacoma going from non JBL to JBL??? And would there need to be anything else changed? Also could I put my speakers from the Tacoma back in the tundra? He keeps his radio off at all times anyways.

 

I'm looking for a better sounding system, the tundra sounds much better and the reason I couldn't reach the maximum setting is because it was so loud.

Ya... Even the non-JBL Tundra has an amplifier under the stock headunit. It's a totally different system than the basic Tacoma system.

I replaced my stock Tundra speakers with Rockfords.
Not bad, but not as big of a help as I was hoping. I'm really liking the Polks in the Tacoma, but on the stock head unit they were not a big improvement... I could not hear the radio on the highway with the window down.

 

I was just waiting to switch out the speakers from the tundra to the Tacoma because it's free and the tundra sounds much better.

 

But it won't sound better in the Tacoma.

The "magic" is in the head unit and amplifier, not the speakers.

Yes, the stock Tacoma speakers suck, but I replaced mine with $200 Polk component units and it was no better until I replaced the head unit.


Replace just the speakers and you will be dissapoint.

 

I've already added a new kenwood head unit which made it sound much better, would adding an amp improve it? Or what would be needed?

You would be ok with putting the Tundra speakers in your truck but it may just be the JVC head unit/Amp with some internal EQing done to make it sound like that. A set of speakers will be your next best move. A set of high sensitivity coaxial or component speakers will sound as good or, most likely, better than the Tundra speakers.

 

New to the audio world so have no idea what "high sensitivity coaxial or component speakers" means haha. Any recommended brands? And how much to get a better sounding, louder system?

 

Don't worry we all were once. Sensitivity is that amount of noise, measure in DB, that a speaker can make with a given amount of power measured using one watt of power usually the higher that number the louder that speaker will get. Coaxial speaker is one that has the tweeter and woofer attached to each other, it's the easiest to instal, and for the majority of the people in the world looking to do a stereo upgrade. A component system is where the tweeter and woofer are separate. If you don't want to spend the money on an amp look for something ~95db or higher and they'll be plenty loud.

 

Thanks man, got any coaxial speakers to recommend and an idea for the cost for all 4 doors, if all 4 are necessary.

 

I've only got 2 up front I like the sound of sound coming from up front but you may not. Right now I have Kicker DS65 and they are nice but I'd recommend Polk Audio or Alpine for good cheap speakers.

 

I wouldn't call Polk cheap, but I love my set.

Didn't go with the coax though... replaced the whole shebang with the Polk db6501 for about $200.

I used the ********* adapters.

I used the 6022i coax on my motorcycle (4 of them) and it sounds great from the Pioneer HU on the highway.

 

Thanks man, I'll look into it more as time goes on. Was just gonna swap the tundras speakers in because it was free and sounded better haha. A color matched grill and eyelids are on the to do list first, not sure what else is above speakers at the moment.
