so yesterday morning we put our dog down..it was one of the toughest things i've had to do...she was 16 and we've had her since I was two..so I don't even know what life is like without her...i loved her so much, she was the best dog ever...my whole family is really upset and it's tough..but i think it was time..we all did..it just got to be too much to cleaning up after her and seeing her barely walk around and be in pain...we spoiled the hell out of her and she had an amazing life...i'll forever love and miss her...the weirdest part is whenever i walk by the room she used to always lay or sleep in, i keep seeing her at a quick glance or out of the corner of my eye...and when we would come in from the garage she'd always be there standing looking up at you, and i was coming in yesterday and right when i opened the door i saw her for a split second...it's crazy..my mom also said she sees her in the room, and we all hear her collar jingle occassionally..idk if it's cuz i'm so used to it or if it's real..i like to think she's still here and lives on with us. anyways, just felt like posting i needed to vent...has anyone had similar experiences? it's rough..

got a pup when i was 1, we had to put her down when she hit 16 yo's as well.
2 years later my parents got a new puppy, and every now and then.. our old dog's name will fall out of our mouth when we calld the puppy.
hard to loose a friend that was always there.
    my condolences.

I feel your pain, I had to put down my 16 year old Lab /Rottie cross 3 years ago. I cried like a baby and still miss him but he had a great life and that's what I choose to focus on. You must be a good pet owner to get her to live to 16, hopefully you'll choose to be that for another dog.

It's never easy putting down ones pet. Ive had to do it a few times. We can be selfish in these times by trying to prolong the lives of our pets. But when they are in pain we must let them go. It sounds like you did the right thing at the right time. So sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss , sadly I have been in that position several times it is never easy.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

    Author unknown...

This is the one we have painted on our Kennel Door for all the pups that have passed.

Guardians Of The NightAuthor - Unknown
Trust in me my friend for I am
your comrade. I will protect you
with my last breath When all
others have left you And the
    loneliness of the night closes
in, I will be at your side.

    Together we will conquer all
    obstacles, And search out
those who might wish harm to
others. All I ask of you is
    compassion, The caring touch
of your hands. It is for you that I
will unselfishly give my life And
    spend my nights unrested.
    Although our days together
May be marked by the passing
of the seasons Know that each
day at your side is my reward.

My days are measured by The
    coming and going of your
    footsteps. I anticipate them at
every opening of the door. You
are the voice of caring when I
am ill. The voice of authority
    when I've done wrong.

Do not chastise me unduly For
I am your right arm, The sword
at your side. I attempt to do
only what you bid of me. I seek
only to please you and remain
    in your favor.
    Together you and I shall
    experience A bond only others
    like us will understand When
    outsiders see us together Their
envy will be measured by their
    disdain.

I will quietly listen to you And
pass no judgment, Nor will your
spoken words be repeated I will
    remain ever silent, Ever vigilant,
ever loyal. And when our time
together is done And you move
on in the world Remember me
    with kind thoughts and tales,
For a time we were unbeatable,
    Nothing passed among us
    undetected.

If we should meet again on
another street I will gladly take
up your fight, I am a Police
    Working Dog and together We
    are guardians of the night.

I'm so sorry. I've been there and know there are no words. Thank you for giving your girl a great, long (though never long enough!) life. Sending sympathy.

I ended up adopting another male dog but his personality and appearance are so totally different. It took a while. You'll know when and if it's time.
