I tried stick for the first time today, spent about an hour laying straight beads on 1/4" flat stock. The guy teaching me had me start on 6011 then moved up to 7018. I never realized you could make such nice looking welds with a stick welder.

I felt like a pro till he had me try vertical beads with the 7018, that was not easy!

 

So I'm looking for a welder that I can use to weld on my sliders. I've never welded before. Is this something I should be paying someone else to do? Or is it pretty strait forward with some practice? Does both MIG and TIG work? Or would one be better then the other for sliders?

 

This is something you pay someone to do. You can practice, but you'd need to practice and perfect every welding position you'd be in. Vertical, overhead, etc. MIG would be the best. TIG for a newby would be very difficult.

Yup This! You will need a lot of practice before you want to weld something like that on your truck. Get a MIG and practice making some beads. Do some small projects to get used to welding pieces together and learn about penetrating the metal. Welding isn't something you learn in a day or two. The more you do it the more you learn and better your welds will look. I've been welding for about 9 years and am comfortable at this point in my welding enough to try something like building a trailer. The last thing you want is to not get the penetration on sliders and when you need them the welds fail or worse yet the welds break going down the road and the slider falls off. Watch plenty of videos and read about it, learn all you can and practice, practice, practice.

You will also learn that the small 110 volt welders are nice for portability but they aren't something you can build anything with. You will learn that some projects need the bigger 220 welders and better duty cycles.

 

Might I also suggest looking into sweeping the bead. This allows for max penetration with smaller welders. Again, this is something that needs tons of practice!

You mean a weave bead? Never heard of sweeping, but a weave is what your describing to me.

Hey guys how does the price of this tubing sound?

1 stick (22' 3") of 1.75" 0.120" wall DOM tubing $120

 

$5.45/ft is pretty high but if your only buying one stick it wont be cheap

 

What a decent price for DOM in that size? Trying to get a stick to make some sliders. Just found out this is from an individual too not a business.

 

X2 but if you are only getting one stick most places charge a lot. but that does sound a little high. I just bought a 20' stick of 2" .250 wall DOM and it was 6.15 a ft.

 

Thats not horrible for a single stick price. If you buy hundreds of feet it can drop down to $3/ft or less but for one stick you will probably have to pay out the ass for it

 

This is a guy selling a stick on craigslist. He's also got a 16' stick of 1.5 .120 DOM for $80 or $5 a ft. Wanting to make some sliders but DOM seems to be hard to find around here. Going to have to find someone here with a tubing bender too to bend it.
