so, there are quite a few stores in so cal (los angeles) where you are expected to show your receipt upon leaving the store (for example, home depot, frys, micro center, best buy, sketchers outlet, and the list goes on).

my wife and i argue about this all the time, but, to me, i feel like i should never have to show my receipt upon exit because i dont think that i have to prove that i am not a shoplifter.

when ever i leave one of these stores and the guy ("security guard") at the exit asks for my receipt, i kindly tell them "no thank you" and i walk out. i get different reactions. sometimes they do nothing, sometimes their jaw drops in shock that someone would just walk out, and other times, i have actually had them yell at me and accuse me of being a shoplifter.... i am just waiting for the day that someone actually grabs my arm, stops me, and demands the receipt... i am not sure what i would do in that case.

the way i look at it is that the store has me on camera waiting in line at the register, they have me on camera being rung up at the cash register, they can see me present my credit card for payment, and they can see me showing my identification. even the guy standing at the door can see me in line going through the whole process and he knows that i just paid for the item.

what ever happened to being innocent until proven guilty. isnt the burden of proof on them?

does anyone know of any laws about this? do the employees at a store have the right to detain you if you dont show a receipt?

    what would you do?

I don't see what the big deal is. If I am heading out the door with $500 in stuff and the guy askes for my receipt I show it. I mean he is just doing his job, no need for me to be a pain in the ass to him.

I hate it, it drives me crazy. I have heard that you don't have to show them as you have already purchased the item. If they try to stop you it is considered unlawful detainment, ie they have to have a reason and not showing a receipt is not a good reason. So I have heard, never tried it.

They make you show you receipt around here at Sam's Club. I do it just because their standing there and it's their job but I don't necessarily feel I should have to. I heard that they do that because they want to make sure you have everything you were charged for.

This one I don't mind, it's the one or two items at COSTCO that I just spent $30.00 on and there are twenty people ahead of me, that one drives me nuts.

agreed, I guess I was thinking more of Best Buy with high dollar electronics, I never have to show a receipt when it is just a cd or a movie.

Usually they just look at the reciept and glance it the cart. No way could they ever tell if you had anything extra in there. Minimum wage jobs, and the people doing them could care less. Total waste of time, and the customer is left with a bad feeling after spending money somewhere.

I dont mind showing my receipt....A couple years ago, as I was approaching the door of Wall Mart, I took off running......just to see what they would do. The 2 people at the door just stood there watching. I was rather dissappointed.

At WalMart here....they usually only ask if there's something not bagged...which is cool with me most of the time. BUT....there is the friggin OLD ASS lady that stops EVERYBODY and goes through their receipt THOROUGHLY no matter if everything is bagged or not. I want to wring her friggin neck!!!!!!!! If I see her working the door when I go in.....I'll go all the way to the other side of the store to leave just to avoid the BS.

Sorry....I get riled about that old lady.......but I don't mind showing the receipt if we have items not bagged......but when it's all in a bag.....come on.....you wouldn't know if I threw something in there or not so don't bug me.

It's annoying, but I do it anyways. You can't really do much about it. It's not a big deal.

I have never thought about it. I show my reciept without complaining or hesitation. If im innocent then whats the big deal.

It probably keeps shoplifting down a little which means that extra cost isn't passed off to me.

They do that here but mark the reciept with a highlighter.

I believe they do this so you can't walk back in with your reciept, fill up another cart with the same items and walk out again.
