The $0.51/mile is also meant to cover depreciation costs for a new vehicle, not just running and maintenance costs. I forget how many years are figured in for the deprecation amount though (as depreciation is higher in the first 3 years of ownership compared to the next 10 years).

Assuming its based on 3 years, losing $10k in value and 15K miles a year, that's $10,000 / 45,000 or $0.22c/mile just for depreciation.

If you keep your vehicle for more than 3 years, bought it used or have it paid off - that's where you make the money from the Federal rate.

Well I have two the Taco V6 and a VW diesel I drive 100 miles a day so I gave it some serious thought and decided to drive the VW to work. Taco 19.2 MPG around 340 miles per tank, VW 50+ MPG 800-850 per tank and usually about 16 gal. per fill up it was a hard one.

in the last 2 weeks, I've had gas fillups of $70.01, $74.02 and $69.04

I drove 841 miles for work which reimbursed me $428.91 (praying the IRS raises the rate currently at $.51/mi)

My truck has 8260 on it with a net cost of $5073.62 which works out to $.61/mi

I've had gas fillups of $66.72, $75.06, $71.52 and paid an insurance adjustment to lower my deductible. That was $36.88

I drove 803 mi in 2 weeks for work which paid back $409.53

    Total money in: $4,914.27

I am very happy with the low cost of ownership so far. especially grateful that my reimbursement and payments+insurance+gas are about equal.

This year the Tacoma made the top ten vehicles with the lowest maintenance costs yearly, and I would expect that it did it with the 2.7l numbers... I think it was approx. 1500.00 yearly...

I didn't forget about you guys, just got lazy about updating. I might post some deeper stats later but as it stands now, I've put $8,000.06 into my truck and gone 55759 miles since my 18 Feb 11 purchase date.

This equates to a $.145/mi cost of ownership. Considering AAA says most people spend $.32-38/mi for their cars, i say I'm doing alright!

Since you're including the truck pmt in your calculations, doesn't that mean your cost per mile will drop significantly once it's paid off? I'm thinking just a few cents per mile. I guess it doesn't really matter if you include the pmt or not you can always average your numbers with or without the pmt at any point. Interesting info in this thread. Far more detail than I'm used to tracking.

Yeah, I include the pmt. I make aggressive payments and should have it paid off in a year to 18 mos. or by 100,000 mi. After that, I am hoping to reach a zero cost of ownership somewhere around the 175k mark
