The insurance premium on a 4x4 is much higher than a 4x2, get some insurance quotes first to get an idea of the difference!

I wouldn't say it sucks, but I'll probably end up going prerunner, just because I don't need it now, and possibly switching down the road. But I'm definitely not going five lug, I'll spend enough money lifting it and what not to have just bought a prerunner.

You said you plan to use it for huntin, right? Let's say you shoot a deer one night and you have to go down a muddy road to get it. You will most likely get stuck. Unless all your acces roads are paved which I doubt. And 4x4 is not that much expensive that a 2wd insurance wise

I'm not tryin to bash on 2wds. We all drive awesome trucks! I'm just sayin if you are gonna use it for huntin I would get a 4wd. Yes the winch and mud tires help but it's still not a 4wd. Sick truck though man

I was pondering over the same thing since I wont be using the 4x4 much but my buddy put it like this. 4x4 are twice the fun which I'm sure is some reference to blondes but it was funny so it swayed me. My new Tacoma 4x4 will be here next week.

No, it's like saying "check the weather forcast"... If you're in a drought, why wear a rain coat. I've never personally "needed" 4x4... Yes, there have been a handful of times that it would have been nice over the years. But never a requirement for me.

My comments were only for the people calling the OP's dad an idiot when he wasnt wrong. The kid is on a budget and he wants a truck for primarily commuting and he's not in snow country. So 4x4 isn't a "need" and 2wd opens more options when shopping, both availability and price.

I never discounted the merits of 4x4. In fact, my next truck will be a 4x4 diesel. But I'm not a teenager on a budget for my first vehicle.

Haha I've started a big debate I didn't want. We had a tree fall on the house, and once that's done and the roof is paid for, we will probably start the shopping.

By the time you buy all these "upgrades", you're going to end up spending more on those than it would've cost to get a 4x4 in the first place. Mud terrains aren't very useful when only 2 out of 4 of them are spinning. ;)

Not looking to open up a big debate , but you can get a prerunner that you can daily drive and not worry about taking it offroad, then eventually when you get a little extra money buy a beater offroad truck aka trail rig that you dont care if you bash up and damage. Just IMHO

just saying for the extra price you are looking at in getting a 4x4 and the upgrades you'll want to make you can buy a trail rig and make it far more capable.

although I wish my Tacoma was 4x4 just because :p

I'm not either, it's just more things to think about when it comes to purchasing a vehicle that you're going to be happy with. As I said before, I'm not a huge off-roader and the main purpose for having 4x4 is for snow. I used to have a PreRunner, and I was severely disappointed every time it let me down.

I see what you're saying. I'd like to have a 4x4 but can't say I need it being in Texas.

OP, if I were you just find the nicest, cleanest and well maintained truck you can find for the price, regardless if it's a prerunner or 4x4. If you do get a prerunner I'd look for one with the TRD package v6 so you would at least have a locker.

Haha yeah man, that's what I'm trying to do, like I said, not even sure if I need 4x4 but it would be nice either way. I guess I made the mistake of thinking that all prerunners had the rear locker not just the trd.. I guess the others just have a 4x4 suspension and regular 2wd?

The non TRD versions of the prerunner are just open diff 2wd on a 4x4 frame. The TRD V6 has the e-locker switch so you just push the button when you need it.

Yeahhh, just looked it up and I have to say that's a little disappointing. That's at least an extra grand for the TRD models. But oh well, I guess I'm paying for quality.

The locker makes a huge difference. It's worth every penny if you don"t have 4wd.
