Not so much those devices but mainly your motherboard and processor. MS has a tool that will tell you what is compatible with what OS's

    This might help

Win 7 and Win 8 run off the same platform so this pertains to Win 8 as well

Just watched the windows 8 preview video, and it looks kinda gay. I think I will stick with 7. Works good for me. But thanks for the info!

I loaded the beta version of 8 just to play around with it seems like its built for touchscreen devices more than anything. Was cumbersome to navigate using the mouse. I wont be upgrading anytime soon.

I believe you can get around the Metro screen, but it takes setting up a script:

Heh yeah what would I know

Both of you may want to brush up on your CPU architecture before you tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.

No please, humor me, I would love to see your technical data that says a 32 bit at 64 bit system uses 4 gb of ram in the same way. Please provide visual demonstration of your knowledge of binary and machine code and how the processor and RAM work together. If you are going to question my knowledge then I would expect that you have some sort of technical data to back up your statement.

That's pretty misleading. The rest of your post says you CAN upgrade...

They don't use it the same way, which you're right about.

    But...

    ...is garbage.

To me, upgrade = put the disk in, run the wizard and it turns your win 7 pc into a win 8. To go from xp to 7 or 8 you must boot from the installation media and install it as a new operating system... Hope that clarifies??

BLAH I knew this would happen. Maybe I don't understand what you are trying to convey. It seems to me like you are stating that 4 gigs on a 32bit os is only equal to 2 gigs of ram on a 64bit os? If that's the case that's wrong and if its right can you provide some backup as I would like to learn. I am not saying I don't believe you but I have never read or heard about ram being addressed like that in 64bit OS's. Again I dont want to get into a pissing contest about who know more about what and who is nerdy than who, cause I don't care.

This is what I am saying is wrong.

Well, I guess that clears it up if we're talking about opinions and not facts.

That's fair, simply a matter of how I explain the difference between 32 bit and 64 to people who don't have any idea at all, much easier to explain than to talk about how a processor handles 1's and 0's and how it maps them to memory.

    So what are the facts?

I believe he is correct. Given the same 32 bit architecture, for example, a 64 bit integer is going to double the amount of memory space required over a 32 bit integer (you have an additional 32 bits of zeros to store). Even though your computer may show 4 GB, it's effectively halved.

You can upgrade from XP. You can take a computer running a genuine copy of XP and upgrade that license to a genuine Windows 8 license for $40.

Your meaning is in the legal sense, the actual process of getting the software from XP to windows 8 is not an upgrade.
