To add to that have you ever trained with officers? Some are not good at shooting, hell some don't like guns....

no, that's a semi-auto, ...an M-4/M-16 would "technically" be... the LSM uses the terminology incorrectly to dramatize and demean...

I just thought that an AR-15 was classified as an assault rifle which was gathered from information I've gathered while researching it, not from the news.

Depends on who you ask.. To gun enthusiasts it is a semi automatic rifle or just a AR 15 or some joke its the evil black gun ha..

Ask the media or (some not all) anti-gun people it is a assault rifle.

I mean it comes down to

    define a assault weapon....

+2. One of my buddies is a CHP officer and doesn't even like going to the range.

The military uses assault rifles. Civillian versions looks the same but don't have the most important feature to be classified as an "assault rifle."

Ah, not that it really matters to me. I was merely curious.

Depends on who you talk to really. From the previous Assault Weapon Ban...

My AR is semi automatic, accepts detachable magazines but nothing else on that list. So under those requirements it is not an assault weapon. Semantics is a biyotch.

News I am watching is saying (not confirmed by authorities) that the AR - 15 had a barrel canister style clip on it with 50 to 100 rounds. I am not familiar enough with this but if confirmed would it then qualify as an assault rifle. I don't see why you would need that clip for hunting deer.

My thing is I don't even think the military's should be considered assault.

Any gun you use can be termed assault, if I use a pistol to shoot people it can be termed and assault pistol.

    Anyway yeah.

the "AR" in AR-15, actually means "armalite rifle", ...armalite was the company who originally produced the design...

assualt rifle is a military arm w/ "select-fire" or "full-auto" capability..

*assault* depends on who you ask.

The whole 50-100 round thing, could be different reasons, fun, recreational, just to have it, for crazy SHTF instances.

The military and law enforcement have a lot better access to training than you sir. Who do you think RUNS most of the "civilian" training?
    Former military and LEO.

For law abiding citizens, they are known as home defense rifles.

The people I know who don't receive it or can't afford it would say I have better access to it than they do.

Yeah, you don't really need a "defense rifle" for self defense in your home.

    Flame on.

I have to argue with this somewhat, some of the police I have shot with were well they could use practice.

I shot with 20 give or take a few and was in the top 5, and I am not a crazy good shooter. I have taken a lot of classes and been through a lot of different instances.

But with that said, thats everywhere you go, your always going to find some who aren't very good at it even in the military I would assume.

Edit re-read and misunderstood, agreed that most police and military have easier access to getting training with weapons.

This is where the term "weapon of choice" comes in. If I can use a rifle better than I can a pistol, guess what I'm keeping by my bed at night?
