Find an older one... ya... not easy to find. The few that remain, the owners aren't letting them go.

I come across a few late 90's here and there

But a aluminium frame cr250 or cr500 is what I have my eye on

Might just have to get one in AZ or CO

I got a set of 17's with breaking breaks and metzler race sicks ready to bolted up

Not going to be able to get it plated in California with a "C" or "3" as the 8th digit of the VIN. That mark is not only the death of street plates, but the green sticker.

You can plate a quad in AZ but can't transfer that tag to California.

Finally sold my GSXR and bought my dream bike! It came with the Jardine and K&N air filter. I just installed an EBR race ECM.

    I have a crf450r

That use to be street legal ,

I blew the trans on it. And sold it to a friend who never fixed it or get current tags. And after 2 years it's now out of the system. And he sold it back to me for half of what he bought it for , Now it just sits. I took the supermoto set up off it and am going to fix the trans and sell it as a dirtbike

Only KTM and Yamaha and a handful of other european companies still do. My KX is a 2006, but basically sat it's whole life so it rides and looks like new.

You would be better off finding a plated bike in another state and trying to register it here. If you find anything 2 stroke and new, it will probably be red sticker. There are a few new 2 strokes I've seen with green stickers but not many and never one with a plate.

I should add that older motorcycles are less of a problem if they're outside the date range-I forget what the years are.

Even if plated out of state, it will still have to be pre-2000 (grandfathered under green-sticker).

If it has a "C" or a "3" as the 8th digit of the VIN, it will be red-sticker no matter where it's registered now, and there's no way it'll get a plate.

Even if it doesn't have the "evil" VIN, it's going to be hard to plate it without an EPA sticker on the frame.
Some DMV offices, such as the one in Norco, are easier to push through, but I've also heard of people being issued green stickers and plates, and 6 months later getting a letter from Sacramento demanding surrender.

The key, apparently, is the previous plate. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I only know of one guy with a plated 2 stroke and that's like an 1981.

As far as stickers go. KTM has a recall for the EPA sticker for 2009-2012 model year bikes. CA is saying if you don't get that sticker replaced, you won't be able to re-register your bike. The dealer is supposed to notify the DMV and give you a letter to include with the next registration (if requested). Most idiotic thing I've ever heard. The sticker is under the tank on the two bikes I own. There are cars with legitimate safety issues where the recall is not mandatory.
