WHAT IS THIS??

okay today i took out the factory blanks on my tacoma and one of them has a connector with wires going to somewhere, the only switch in that area is the fog lights. is it for traction control? and(or) if i get a switch will i be able to use it?

 

I think it may be an access point for toyota service? I researched once think that is what I found out...

 

Somebody else asked this a couple months back. The answer was that it was the harness plug for the AC inverter switch. The TRD package trucks have the switch and the inverter outlets in the bed. Someone said that the wiring is installed in all of the trucks simply for ease at the factory and that the TRD boys get the switch and plugs in the truck.

I have no idea if this is true.

My truck was a standard extra cab v6 tacoma without TRD package. I removed the blank piece and found a plug for the diff switch. As I was installing my rear axle housing with the E-locker I didn't find a plug(Under my bed) that would plug into the E-locker itself. A few days later my wire harness showed up to my house late... My locker works on the truck, but I don't have a light that lets me know my locker is engaged. Haha.

what would be involved in installing the inverter? is it actually useful or just a stupid feature?

 

If this is true, are the wires already run to the bed of the truck as well? Could I just place a switch, inverter, and plug and have everything I need?

Usually, the wires are in place, and it's the hardware that's not installed. I don't know what is missing in this case, but I'm willing to bet you'd find wires going at least to the back of the cab.

It is correct that the blank switch cover does have wires for the Inverter switch connected to it. However,the actual wires for the inverter are only installed at the factory on trucks that are ordered with the power inverter. The inverter is installed under the front passenger seat, and consists of a wiring harness that is protected by a metal shield and another metal piece that protects the wires as they go to the console for the cooling fan for the inverter. Then you would need the harness that runs from the back of the bed that connects to the inverter wiring harness that goes under the seat, not to mention all the parts for the plug in the side of the bed. It's alot of work but it can be done. I work at the assembly plant and the the inverter harness that gets installed under the passenger seat is installed at the next process after the one I work in.

 

Did they change the location between '09 and '12? In '09 the inverter is installed under the console.

 

So is what you are saying is that the base model with convenience package does not have this?

 

I was thinking the same thing, just checked TIS and my '08 shows that the inverter is under the center console, but i already told babytruck that i will try to find out more info on it tomorrow at work.

So it has the wires that go to the inverter? Everything from the inverter on needs to be installed?

 

I have one in my 2011 OR and have never used it. I check to wattage on a coffee pot to see if it could power this so that my wife cold have coffee when we are camping and it will not. I think maybe a light and that's it. If you put your own inverter in you put put a bigger one in but may have to run new power cables to bigger inverter. I think investing in a little generator would be a better idea.
