I've heard scion is planning to enter the unibody pickup market with the ABAT but now, there is talk of KIA making a unibody pickup called the Soul'ster ? Im personally not a fan of uni-body pickups but what is your take on this.

It seems that tacoma may stay body on frame if scion is entering the truck market. That's good news for us !!

I never saw the ABAT as a threat/replacement for the Tacoma.

ABAT/Soulster/Ridgeline/Avalanche... they all have their place in the market.
For someone who doesn't need the load capacity or off-road capability of a truck, wants the comfort of an SUV/car, but also needs a more "dirt-friendly" cargo space (sports equipment, climbing gear, etc...), they are a great solution.

As was mentioned they serve a niche market. People who don't need an actual pickup, but need a bed to put a dirty dog, hiking boots, bags of sod etc. If you don't like it...don't buy it.

    It's cute...

Personally, I have nothing against the Unibody pickups. They're more practical for most average homeowners who don't really need a truck but like the outside hauling option for wet, dirty, oversized stuff.

For you guys who hate Unibody trucks, ever see this thing in action?
It's an Australian-made truck with a supercharged V8 and it hauls ass. Still not much of an off roader or a heavy hauler, but a neat concept just the same.

Tacoma absolutely has to stay body on frame, Unibody would destroy our trucks name. I think Toyota knows that though.

The unibody trucks are fugly though, and I wouldn't buy a Kia anything.

My Dad had a first gen Avalanche Z66, it was a freaking awesome truck. Probably wouldn't be too good off road though.

The KIA truck looks fugly, and the ABAT would almost cause me to lose faith in Toyota.

I don't believe that's a Unibody truck though. Don't they share the same frame as a Silverado?

As mentioned by others above, there is a market for those; maybe just not for most of us who want a "real" truck.
In other countries there are similar unibodies based on small cars like mazda 323, nissan sentra etc. and they are top sellers for businesses that do small deliveries, or even maintenance technicians who only need to load a small tool box and folding ladder - no need to drive a F-250 for that.

My Mom had a Ford Bantam like this ^^^ for a while, and it was great for going to buy a few plants or fertilizer for the garden etc.

ABAT is the worst looking of them all.
(sad to say, I would like to support Toyota, but not with an ugly thing like that)

The Avalanche is the best looking though. I kind of like the way it looks to be honest, but that doesn't mean I would buy it.
