Changing tire sizes on base 2012 Tacoma 4x4 from 245/75/16 to 265/70/R16

My question is, is Changing tire sizes on base 2012 Tacoma 4x4 from the factory base size 245/75/16 to 265/70/R16 ok to do?? Seeing as the size i want to change to, the 265/70's is a factory size (offered on the TRD off road package) would this change cause any problems?? I was told it could possibly alter the speedometer readings and the way the transmission shifts, if it was an automatic, but I shouldn't have any transmission issues because I have a manual trans, are these statements correct?? Because I really like the look of the 265's.. And if anyone is interested, I'd like to sell the set of 245/75/16's BFG all-terrain T/A ko's I have on there now, they are brand new, only have about 700 miles on them, asking $180 per tire, bought them new for $216 per tire, please let me know, thank you!

 

245/75R16 and 265/70R16 are the same diameter. It's all good. By all means swap 'em!

But, but, shouldn't you have thought of this, oh, 725 miles ago??

And as whipper sez - many folks go "oversize" to the 265/75R16 size.

 

I think the rubbing only occurs if you have 0mm offset wheels. Stock inset wheels won't rub at all, at least based on limited sample size (OZ-T, for example).

well i do not want to oversize, but excuse my ignorance here but they really do have the same rolling diameter?? but, how is that so? because im under the impression that, the first number, the 265 is wider than the 245, and (this is where the difference is mde in my head) that the 75 side wall is bigger than the 70 sidewall?? so isnt the rolling diameter smaller on the 265/70/r16's?? just curious because i wanna be 100% sure b4 i go through with this, thanks for all the input! and yes.. i should have done this 725 miles ago lol and the only reason i kept the stock size was because i thought i was doing the wise and correct thing by keeping the OEM size, because it says in the drivers door jam that the replacement tires should be the same size as the original equipment tires. so idk.. tires sizes get confusing, my head is going 1000mph lol

 

The middle number is a percentage of the tread width, not an absolute value.

75% of 245 mm is close enough to 70% of 265 mm

For BFG KOs, 245/75R16 is 30.5" dia. 265/70R16 is 30.7" dia.

 

wow thank you for showing me that link on bfg's website, that really cleared things up.. yeah. in all reality we are talking about tenths of an inch, literally then lol. but it really helped alot.. i still dont understand why the two look so different on the truck tho, it must just be me lol.. so i guess its not really worth changing tires then hm?

 

They look different because the 265 are wider than the 245.

 

very true, and i have one last question, since im going to go through with the swap to the 265/70/R16's, there wont be any Upper Control Arm rubbing issues at any steering angle, or will there be?? because my truck is a base and a the 265's are from the TRD off road package?? i mean it is after all, technically speaking a 'factory or OEM' size tire, i wouldnt think toyota would change UCA size between packages right lol?? I know ive probably answered my own question, but i just want to confirm, thank you!

You're going to swap brand new 245/75R16s for 265/70R16s? That sounds like a huge waste of money, all you're getting is an extra 20 mm in width...

If you're going to do it at least upsize in diameter as well.

 

I run the stock suspension also, my winter tires are 265 75 R16. Under normal driving condition no rubbing. I had them rub before, but usually turning in reverse and hitting bumps. Although I did feel them rub, it was very minor rubbing, rubber on plastic. So 265 70 R16 should be good.

 

So, the consensus is that I could go from the 245/75 16 to a 265/75 or 265/70 without a problem. (My truck is a stock 2010 PreRunner Regular Cab). Can I shove a 285 under there without rubbing? Right now it looks like a chubby gal on a set of ice skates....

im putting on cooper Discoverer A/T3's i've heard nothing but good things about them, they are ordered and will be coming in tomorrow i had cooper H/T's on my 2001 tundra TRD Limited and loved them lol

well from what im hearing and understanding, i wouldnt really go past a 265/75/R16 on a stock suspension

 

nah, i dont really wanna go for the 265/75/16's cause iv heard of rubbing issues. althought very minor and slight rubbing issues, still rubbing issues, and i dont really want that, and plus, since the size tire im getting, the 265/70/R16, comes stock on the TRD Off Road Tacomas and along with everyone else's reassurance and im also puttin on the bilstien 5100's and setting the front at 1.75 inches, so im pretty damn sure they wont rub at all and i should be just fine, plus, i love the look that the 265 tire gives the tacomas, it looks sweet, and only 20mm?? i was under the impression it was about 2 inches more width?? well, whatever it may be, i love the look of the 265's.. and i really do like my BFG's, they are a great and tuff tire but they are alittle loud for my taste, especially with my manual trans, the Cooper discoverer A/T3's im getting are supposed to me much quieter, not to mention they also look really good and are priced right lol

 

i still cant believe the difference in look between the two tires tho, its kind of unbelievable if u have them side by side, i understand the difference is marginal but it really does change the look.
