They had to clear the scene first the idiot told them he had bombs hidden around the building. Then they have to id the people if they have id on them or find thier purses / wallets etc verify who to notify . It is not a job anyone wants to do but the right person has to be found and notified. You never want to tell someone a loved one has been killed and have it not be that persons loved one.

Nailed it. In the instant information age - It can be hard to realize that not everything is cut and dry. This was an unexpected event, at night, with all sorts of complications. And even ONE incorrect notification is too many...

Put him in the military. Let him be the guy they use to train members to become proficient in water boarding.

I hope he stays alive long enough to figure out what the hell it was that led him to this. It's easy to say "he snapped", but the amount of planning and effort put into this is borderline supervillian stuff. I don't think this is your classic "going postal" scenario". I have my own theory, but the sociologist in me really wants to know what the hell happened. The more you look into his background, the more the simple "he went nuts" thing seems unlikely...at least, not your everyday "the chair told me to" nuts.

On the other side of the coin, when his mom says, "You've probably got the right guy", that is awful intriguing too.

But here's a question...if the guy IS certifiably nuts, has a legitimate mental illness, does he deserve treatment or mercy, or is he equally culpable? For example, when my FIL had brain cancer, there was a fear he might become violent to my MIL. He wouldn't have been charged if he did (though he'd be put in hospital for his own good). When an Alzheimer patient becomes violent, they attempt to restrain them only enough as required, and let them try and live a normal life. Or is there a tipping point, where one says, "Sorry, that act does not warrant compassion, regardless of the why"? Legitimate question, and something I've wondered for a long time. I don't have an answer, beyond the first thing that needs to be done is have the dangerous individual removed from general society.

My buddy said the exact same thing a few days ago. He said he'd achieve real super villian status if he broke out from prison and killed 12 more people.

I agree as well, a 'he just snapped' would be if he rattled off 12 rounds from a .40 that he carried in. He had been planning this for a long time and I wonder why.

If he had paralyzed my wife and killed my 6yo daughter there is no limit to what I'd do to him. I can't imagine the grief for these families. I took my son to see the movie Sunday, and found myself watching the edges of the theatre even though we were in a small-ish town with few people watching with us.

After seeing the guy on TV today ... IMO, he will try to convince the public that he is nuts and avoid death sentence. He is very smart and this is still a "game of sorts" (at this point) for this guy.

I would give him a 50% - 50% chance (at this time) of life in prison ... even with all his premeditation.

And IF he does get the death sentence ... it could take 20+ years (if ever) to execute him.

IMO ... I truly believe that he is an ... "evil coward playing a deranged game" ... and the best that society can hope for is ... that he becomes disillusioned with his game and takes his own life.
    .
    .
EDIT ... The evening news tonight showed him being introduced (several years ago) in some type of competition and said he enjoyed ... "human psychological strategy in a gaming format".

I still say ... this guy was into this as a "game of sorts" ... that he took too far ... he is not nuts ... he is evil and very smart.

Yeah for some cases I can see how the death sentence could take 20 years for a confirmation but then even that's pushing it.....but for this? Come on now....

On a side note, I hear the people that push the button on death row make bank.

everyone is all over gun rights now in the media.

i have heard from a lot of folks that if people where allowed to conceal carry in the theater it would have made the situation worse :/

carry a gun and a high quality flashlight if others felt the same way and where allowed to exercise their right to carry imo the situation would have been brought to a conclusion much sooner.

either way i would rather be involved in a shoot out than a massacre anyday.

Just his face alone pisses me off. I hope they get his motive out of him then I hope he suffers a slow, painful death.

Are you kidding me?? It would have taken 2 well placed shots to take down this shooter and potentially save the lives of everyone in there. I pray that you don't have a CCW.
