AFE pro dry is only 40ish bucks and is reuseable easy to clean and maintain and no oils. It is the best filter you can get period. I had a k&n before my pro dry. Wish I had switched sooner

I don't really care for K&N too expensive for my tastes, I've always made my own air-intake or just used OEM filter, deckplate mod is my next project.

Definitely this one, I have one and like it a lot better than the kn. You can actually wash it clean and let it dry and it's as good as new, you'll never have to buy an air filter again after this and don't have to worry about oil. Don't spend money on the CAI, I had one and all it really did was make the truck louder. You can try the deck plate mod, many on here like it but for me it never made much difference so I closed the plate up.

Running deck plate + K&N, no issues. How hard is it not to over oil a K&N filter, come on....

since mpg and performance arent really an issue, which would be better honestly for my engine longevity, a pro dry or an oem filter from toyota

I won't run a K&N (oiled cotton gauze) filter due to the filtering ability (backed up with BITOG/analysis results). When I did research on the ProDry on BITOG, what I found was that the initial oil analysis after switching showed an increase in silica, it then leveled out for all further analysis' after the filter dirtied up some. So as long as you didn't "completely" clean it (wash, dry) the filtering ability of the ProDry was not too much worse then paper. Given that, I just plan to vacuum out my Prodry annually, then every 3-4 years I'll give it a wash/dry.

I am currently running a K&N CAI. Does anyone know if you can get a dry filter that fits on the K&N tube? I put less than 5000 miles on my truck in a year, so would cleaning the K&N once a year work fine.

Just be aware that the cleaner the K&N filter is, the worse it actually filters.

to the OP or anyone else with an interest...

Comparing the K&N drop in... to the fipk element... is a poor comparison.
They are not equal by design.

The pleat holes of the drop in, are larger/less of (per sq. inch) then what the fipk element offers.
Over oiling the drop in, is more problematic then with the fipk element
as it is situated closer to the MAF and is a direct (straight thru) flow.
The fipk element is mounted farther away from the MAF and is not a straight thru flow design.

I've run the fipk on my junk since the first day I drove it home in '00.

But I've also field tested it against a K&N drop in, as well the oem fuzzy using the AB w/wo the DP mod

I found that the same amount of talc was present on the inside of the intake tube, regardless of any type of drop in filter.

Tho' my fipk actually showed less talc in the intake tube.

I really don't care if the oil is dirty when analyzed...
as I change oil often... especially after a weekend in a dusty environment.

I've permanently clogged up paper filters in a weekend's worth of wheeling here in the dusty, dry southwest.

Some of the fine talc around these parts will get past any filter.

But my fipk element will most always keep allowing air flow...
even when dirty... whereas running paper elements would almost always clog to shit and set off the cel, after a days worth of eating dust.

btw... K&N filters are not meant to be clean just because they look dirty.
The build up is actually a good thing (to a certain point) as that build up will actually help filter even better.
So... if you have one... stop over cleaning it. JMO

I don't live by scientific studies...
by instead rely upon what is real... in the field.

After I ran my personal tests between the oem Fuzzy w/oem AB and DPM
comparison with the K&N drop in... and the fipk element...

I found that the fipk worked best for me...
and twelve years later... it's still on my junk...
and the motor is still running just fine.

If one chooses to run a fipk...
I recommend using the pre-filter sleeve...
These will help minimize clogging under severe dusty conditions.
Plus you can remove it occasionally and shake it out.
Thus affording a whole weekend of fun without looking at that stupid cel light.

Tho' I'm pretty pleased with not ever having to purchase another paper filter.... (heck I'd screw one of those up every damn weekend)
In fact... K&N sent me a new fipk element 100% free...
when mine began to dry rot after 10 years of use.

btw... if yer using a paper type filter...
it is not a good idea to reverse blow those clean.
it is likely you would damage the pleat holes...
and just allow more shit thru...

I've tried to blow those out some in the field (low pressure)
and the cel would not clear, even after resetting the pc

to each, their own of course...
No sweat off my balls ;)

Replacing a $15 filter once a year is really such a chore?

Got any data to back that up other than what came from an AFE or Amsoil dealer site?

Stock paper is the BEST filter you can get.

About the time they start filtering "well" they are more restricting than the oem paper filter.

How much is it to send oil in for studies? I have a k&N and have used k&n on bikes and other cars with no problems. Anyone have a afe dry on a 1st gen tacoma willing to send in oil to compare to mine? Want to know which of these two "Performance" filters ,filter best.

Used to be $20 when I sent the samples in from my bike.

I think they went up, but it's still under $30.
Don't bother with paying extra for the TBN unless you are wanting to push extended drain intervals.
