Airbag detonation

So I haven't done any serious wheelin in my truck yet and tomorrow I'm going to push it. Do I need to disconnect my airbags so they don't go off, or will they only go off if I front end hit something? And how would I disable the driver airbag?

I've never seen an airbag thats gone off in one of these Taco's while wheelin. I think you should be fine as long as you dont hit somthing. They're inertia activated so they should only deploy in the case of very a quick stop from impacting somthing. I've mobbed my truck pretty decently and never had it go off.

 

Takes a pretty good amount of G's to set it off.... someone have that number?

 

I haven't disconnected mine ever...and haven't popped them. If you are doing some crazy high speed jumping stuff or whatever...might want to...but other wise...I don't forsee you having a issue.

 

I nose dived in Pismo hard, bent some brackets and hella knocked my head into the steering wheel. My passenger couldnt move later cuz of whip lash. Yet, the air bags never deployed. You'll be fine.

 

I was wheelin the other day, shot out of a huge rut and smoked a tree, really hard I almost smacked my head off the steering wheel, had to rock the truck out which made me hit it twice more, broke a couple of clips on the bumber but the airbags never went off, hell I flipped end for end, a 2004 f150 two winters ago after I went into a ditch and the front end hit a culvert, and my air bags didnt go off then!

IDK...that shit just doesn't sound like fun to me. And DAMN...That's rough and stil no airbags....hmmm

 

If you are gonna jump so high that your air bag will go off, then you need to keep it connected...

 

Airbags dont sound fun to me...$1500+ to replace one is not cool

 

nah, maybe a couple feet at most. It still is my daily driver, but I need to use this $3k in suspension lol

but I was talking about the bouncing your head off the steering wheel part...I need every brain cell I can get....

 

If your rig has side-curtain airbags, there is a switch on the dash to de-activate them... guess there is a chance those can get triggered when wheeling. That would suck if you just tipped onto your side going 1mph and the airbags poped you in the head!

But no, like the other guys said, the airbags are really advanced and only go off during the approprate impacts. Hollywood is the cause for our unrealistic fear of airbags popping off at random... it does make for a good laugh sometimes though.
