So I had LSD installed today, long story but it worked out in my favor. Visually looking at the truck how can I tell if they actually installed the LSD?

    stock, for now
crack open the diff cover and take a peek. There should also be a switch in the cab to engage the locker

The Limited Slip Differential or "LSD" is not a locker. It is a "posi" rear end or traction aid...

It will look different than an open diff if you remove the diff cover, though...

Also, if you gas it on loose ground both wheels will spin. If only one wheel spins, you don't have a LSD...

That would only be applicable if it was a TRD clutch-type LSD that was installed (and they bothered to put the sticker on ...) ...

LSD was installed by Toyota under warrenty so it should be a TRD LSD.

I'd say do what one buddy said, hammer down on the gas, if both tires spin, or if you leave to burn out marks then you know it is an LSD, dont forget also that the LS Differential needs to be serviced more often then an open diff!

Jack up the ass end, spin one wheel....If the other wheel spins opposite it's open, if it spins the same way with a definite clunk/click as it engages....LSD. I think......Chris?

Normally, Yes. BUT, I had an instance when I did this to a friends truck (who had an open diff) and BOTH wheels spun in the same direction. Also, An LS diff shouldnt make any noise when turning the wheels.

Most of the time. Depending on how thick the diff fluid is.

The Ring gear has power delivered to it via the pinion gear. From there, the ring gear transmits the power to the other side via "Pinion" gears. It allows a change in speed from one side to the other. It only works if BOTH wheels have traction. When the truck is lifted off the ground, and the TIRE is turned, instead of the Drive shaft, and on an open diff, when one wheel is spun, the planetary gears tansmit that movement to the other side, but reversed. Also, when doing this, the drive shaft will not spin. Not sure if Im describeing it propperly.

    This may help:

If you can get past the first 3 minutes of this it will explain the differential....LSD will be easier understood though it isn't really explained here.

And for a real treat, watch for Chris at the end doing his "Circus Bear" imitation.

So I have two other questions, if the LSD keeps the two wheels from spinning at different speed, what happens on a turn? Wouldn’t on wheel spin faster then the other during a turn?

Also does the LSD only engage during acceleration or is it also deceleration?

Yes, An LSD lets one wheel spin faster or slower than the other. An LSD works by transfering more torque to one wheel or the other. When one wheels starts to "slip" and more throttle is given to the engine, the clutch pack in the diff tightens and transmits more torque to the tire that is not slipping. When the throttle is let off, torque to the diff is cut, therefore, the clutch pack in the diff releases a little bit.
