So I took the paper targets home from the range last night and as they sit on my desk now I was wondering what is a "good shot"? We had the target at 3 yds. last night since it was our first time and my groupings are almost all in the black of a standard NRA 25yd target. My thoughts are that means I can shoot a target that is invading my house in the torso pretty easily but now what should I be working toward to improve my shot? What distance makes a good shot?

Also I am thinking that at some point it would be good to learn to shoot targets on the move since most situations will not allow me to point, line the sights, get proper stance, and then pull the trigger. :D

You guys should definitely take the pistol fundamentals course there. Much more structured and purpose driven training.

A "good shot" to some may be different to others. To me... getting 2 rounds in the high torso Quickly and being able to make follow up shots quickly and effectively. Shooting tight groups is good too, but I see many people that can make a 5" group at 10 yards but can't draw and fire or do an El Presidente drill without fumbling. Like I said the main instructors for pistol almost always have a real life example of why you do x,y and z too.

As you shoot more move the target out further. Most shootings will happen within the 3-7 yard range. At 7 yards you should have no issues doing a good double tap center mass and a follow up head shot. Before you start to try anything quick, learn the basics. Draw, fire one shot and holster. Keep doing this. Practice reloading as well. As you get more comfortable and keep practicing the basics, you'll get faster.

    Remember:

    Grip
    Stance
    Breathing control
    Sight Picture
    Sight Alignment
    Trigger manipulation
    Follow through

These seven things are the seven fundamentals of shooting. Things you should constantly be striving to improve.

Yep, the wife has one. Installed a budget spacer lift recently.
I still have my two yotas :).
Definitely preoccupied. No baby yet but very close, hopefully.

Congrats Dev, keep pushing for the position and working hard saving lives.
