I don't trust auto's when out in the woods hunting or backpacking. To many parts to fail and or not work when full of dirt (except glock). I see a revolver in your future....

OP, I'm about your size, and I carry a XD40 subcompact every day in a CompTac MTAC holster. I had 2 different taurus Millenium 9mm's, but wanted something a touch bigger, but not a 45. I've carried the XD for several years now and wouldn't give it up for anything. I do sometimes carry a Keltec 380 in a desantis pocket holster as backup.

I hate the way Glocks shoot. Never once have I liked a Glock that I shot. But when it comes to a gun that will work no matter what, Glock takes the cake in the semi-auto market. My buddy is a Glock fan boy and he burred his Glock 26 in his back yard. Let it sit there for months. Pulled it out of the ground, started pushing rounds down it. Not one jam. Very impressive.

I guess that I am a Glock fan boy. I carry a Glock 27 and I love the way it feels. The most important thing is to find a pistol that you like and will carry.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
Run that mag extender on mine. Definitely makes it easier to grip.

From what you said you will use it for I would def. go with a S&W hammerless revolver.

That said, I carry a Bodyguard .380 with the Clipdraw. I wanted this over other small .380's due to the external safety. It was my first carry gun and I didn't feel comfortable without it. The safety is easy to take off on the draw. Check out Clipdraw for holsters though. Also McCabes. I live in Florida and I knew anything much bigger would sit in my night stand. With the Clipdraw I can carry wearing pretty much anything.

    So many choices!

I've taken everything you've all said into consideration. And I thank u all for input.

I'm really looking into the XD S 45. I'm gonna see if I can get my hands on one and see how it feels.

I held my buddies the other day after he got his extender.....still only makes it a three finger grip for my hand but def makes it alot better. Great carry weapon once it has the extender.......but without it its tiny.

guess i'm lucky i can get my pinky on there too...lol. completely understand the 3 finger shooting w/ the regular mag. going between the two on the range is a vast difference.

I don't worry to much about hiding a gun. If u know I'm carrying a 1911 with a crimson trace laser on it, i would say not too many people ain't going to F with you..lol but you can't go wrong with any revolver as a back up and the bodyguard is a great choice along with plenty other options.

well if you are thinking of leaving in your truck alot, i have a bodyguard 380 that fits perfect in the change holder or whatever that slot is just past the ignition under the dash.
the shield is a decent gun. i have the 9mm variant. thought with the style you may find that with shooting it may not be comfortable. the slim not so round grip may cause discomfort while shooting especially in .40S&W. just my opinion.
what i primarily carry is the s&w m&p9c. it has a 12 round mag (twice that of my shield) and depending on how concealed, i have mags with and without the pinky extension.
but its not just how it feels to hold it, it's howcomfortable is it to shoot. if you are going to rely on a gun to protect you and your family/friends, make sure you feel good shooting it. you will want to practice with it.
but as where your choices are. i would choose something that was reliable and felt good to you. the taurus pt series is a good sturdy gun for truck carry. the slim i have only fired the 380 of. i know the mags on it look "backwards" thus causing a problem if you had to reload in a hurry.
Just depends on you and your ultimate need. do you want deep conceal or light conceal? does round count matter?
    thanks.
