Our society its seems has been trained to be scared around guns. I wouldnt like being the center of attention OC would bring me and the people around me. This is why no one knows when I carry which is the way I like it.
But if someone wants to OC I say go for it, just be prepared to get scared looks all the time.

 

Thats a good point, but from the other side, if a crook sees a gun he knows hes gonna have to kill you to get what he wants. You have the element of surprise if he doesn't know you have it.

 

How can one not draw attention to themselves when open carrying???

I resent anyone who feels some strange need to carry openly, as you are making we responsible gun owners look like complete idiots to the general public.

Yes, I am calling you irresponsible. You're really more interested in your selfish need to, again, call attention to yourselves, bait the both law enforcement & non-firearm owning citizens. Save me your second amendment bullshit.

I've seen Utube vids & pics and others, mostly on firearms sites, of groups of people who have organized, who like to walk through their cities, gather at eating places and otherwise make asses of themselves to exercise their 'rights'. One thing I notice, every vid, every pic: These people all look like your stereotypical backwoods Yahoos, inbred rednecks, clowns pretending to be old west lawmen or gunslingers.

Once more I resent you open carry guys all to hell. Most of you are more likely to inadvertently shoot yourselves or some innocent with your blatantly carried piece, than you will ever, ever run into a situation where you need to defend you and yours.

 

Shit happens. But my perception, and most likely the general public's, is that anyone who does open carry is an attention whore and probably more interested in that showing off than defending himself. And perhaps very dangerous.

And Jhodge83, I think you are needlessly, perhaps stupidly, over-armed if you are carrying a full-sized battle weapon for self defense. See my post in the 'Concealed Carry Thread'.

 

How is someone "over-armed" by carrying a full-size handgun versus carrying a compact handgun? That doesn't make any sense. A compact handgun packs just as much firepower as a full-size.

 

This guy is spot on. Open carry is for people who want attention. Most responsible gun owners want to blend in when in an urban setting. If I was hiking through the woods or camping, fine, but making everyone at Macy's uncomfortable isnt cool or funny.

You sound like the kind of guy that will go to prison for an unjustified shooting. If someone gets mad and pushes you, are you gonna bust a cap? Hope you like prison.

It's like they say in the police academy. There's a dangerous gun on every call you go to... Yours. If someone gets the upper hand on you, your gun just became their gun. It's better to avoid minor conflicts (couples fighting, people insulting you, etc) and not let anyone know you're armed. Being a responsible gun carrier is more important than pride.

And FYI- There isn't much of a speed difference for CCW people who train. All I have to do is lift my T-shirt and my gun is right there like it would be during open carry. If I am blending in with everyone else, I will have more of an opportunity to move and plan than John Rambo who already let the cat out of the bag.

When you have a gun showing on your hip in public, you are a target. Weather you like it, or agree with it. Either from law enforcement, criminals or the general public who doesn't know what to make of you. Most people who open carry don't have level 2 or higher holsters. They also don't have any training in gun retention.
Protect yourself and your family, but do it discreetly.
