Divorcing My F-150, Going Back To A Taco

Hello from a 60-year old fool, who traded a perfectly great 2010 Tacoma for an F-150 last year.

While the F-150 served me well, it's simply too large, cumbersome and unnecessary for my wants/needs (plus it won't fit into my garage, should I need to when a nerve-wracking hail storm pops up).

My previous Taco was a DC, but I've found a 2009 4X2 Sport Access Cab (4.0L) at a local dealership priced at $24,500. Mileage is 29,000. Interior/exterior are immaculate. Unless it's been touched up or painted, the hitch receiver appears to have never towed anything. Carfax verifies it's a one-owner and also verified the mileage (the dealer provided that to me).

Supply vs Demand - I suspect that due to the resale value of Tacos, and the demand for them, I won't have much negotiating leverage.

This is where you experts come in. Obviously (and if you disagree, please tell me), the mileage is low for a 2009. These can run well into the six-figure miles.

I'm just one of those nervous buyers....weary of dealerships....and want your opinions on the $24,500 asking price.

IMO, the price seems a little high. While not exactly apples to apples, in late 2009 I paid $27k for a 4x4 Sport Double Cab w/ 6k miles. If the same truck in an Access Cab 4x2 is only worth $2,500 less today, that's some ridiculous value. If I were in your shoes, I'd be looking at that truck more in the $21k - $22k range. While the mileage is great, you're still buying a 4 year old truck. A 2009 Sport 4x2 AC was probably what, $26k when new? If that?

EDIT: I just looked real quick on Toyota's website, and a 4x2 V6 Prerunner AC starts at about $23k...add $3k for the Sport package, and you're looking at a truck that lists for only about $1,500 more than we are talking...who knows what you could negotiate down to. Maybe look new for that price?

 

Also wanted to add that this is a huge dealership, and their vehicles are all "certified" and the 2009 comes with a 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty. I assume that means powertrain? Engine, transmission, drive components? I'm mechanically challenged, obviously.

I don't know about prices down there, but up here that's a bit high. It's not obscene, but it would be a good deal at 2-3 grand cheaper.

Consider - I bought my 2012 4x4 sport access cab for 29k. So, for 5 thousand more, you get a new truck and 3 years warranty...

Given that new cars typically get lower interest loans, it might be a good idea to see what sort of deal you can swing on a new one.

The upside to owning a Taco is that they really hold their value. The downside to buying a Taco is that they really hold their value.

Too much. You should be able to get them down to 20,500 -22,000, depending on local market. Is this a Toyota Dealership? Is it a Toyota Certified Used Vehicle?

[EDIT] Late post. The dealership thinks that their warranty is worth about $2500. That price is a little high still.

 

I would consider going new for those kind of dollars.

 

BTW, you may want to check out PenFed for your loan. They have a 1.99% used auto rate for military. Their customer service has some bad reviews, but I had no problem with them. (I'm not military, but I made a donation to become a member)

 

X2 I bet you could get a new one with the same trim and everything for $27k-$28k which to me is worth the peace of mind.

 

Here in the Mid West . Kansas and Missouri we have 0% for 72 months and you can get a new 2012 Tacoma TRD sport 4x4 for 29k I have the long bed so it was a tad more , I could not be more happy with my truck . I am not looking for a 4 cycl. extended cab .

 

Yep...y'all are all mostly very spot on. It's difficult finding a pricing site that actually lists the Sports Package, so I've had to click whatever options that seem to fit a Sports.

From what I've found, the price is far too high. Y'all may be on to something about looking at new as opposed to the 2009.

I'm going to e-mail the internet sales manager and have him fax me the spec sheet showing all options and whatever else I can obtain to get a more fair market value.

I must also add, that you have welcomed me far more hospitably than the F-150 forum I joined. It took me about 50 posts over there to stop being hassled for asking questions as a newb.

i would def look at new. You can easily get $1500 off the sticker price plus a $500 rebate going on. you can also hold out for another month or so and get a 2013. Good luck!

 

The certified warranty is the powertrain carried out 7 years or 100k miles from the original date of purchase. Certified vehicles carry a bumper to bumper warranty of 12 months/12k miles. You can purchase an extended warranty on a certified toyota but it must be done at the time of purchase and it costs a fair amount more than if you shopped for an extended warranty on a new Toyota. Food for thought.

I would check your options on purchasing new before going the used route.

 

Or maybe get a better deal on a new 2012 when they 2013's come out. Dealership said they aren't changing.

I looked at getting a new one and a used one with low miles. It was work the few extra grand to have something brand new. I came from a gas guzzling F-150 and I'm glad I did it!

 

There was a 2012 Magnetic Grey DoubleCab Tacoma for $26,000 at my local dealership last week. I imagine you could talk that 2012 down to $24,500.

I would go for a new model or an older one with alot of features at that price.

I use to drive a 2000 F150 5.4L. I also got rid of it because it didn't fit in the garage, and I didn't need that big of a truck. I'm enjoying the Tacoma.

 

08 4x4 sport 6 speed(in hight demand cuz it took some patience to get it).....24,000 with the 7yr/100,000...........They had it at 25k and I talked them down to 23ish.

So I def think its overpriced........over a year ago I got the same or better (had a 1250 dollar honda as trade too) deal on a 4x4. Get them down considerably or look elsewhere buddy. I think people are right if you are looking for a 4x2. At that price look into new or be patient.

The price of used ones was just out of sight when I bought my 2011 I payed the same money for a new one that they wanted for one 1 or 2 years old. As it stands right now I could get what I payed for mine right now with 20K and a year on it.

 

Also, a lot of times some dealers will be willing to negotiate a little more at the end of a month, at least the ones here do. I think it as something to do with them not wanting to pay the taxes on the vehicles the following month so the deal a little more in the last 2-4 days of the month, or so I've heard. I'm sure someone on here can explain it better or may have a better reason why they do it. Just a thought though, couldn't hurt to look into it to save another couple hundred or so
