Yes, but a polymer punch or brass punch will help you not scratch it up. I wouldn't use a steel punch. I also find a standard set of pliers with a layer of electrical tape wrapped around each jaw is the perfect press for installing the bolt catch roll pin. Otherwise you're trying to fit the punch right up next to the receiver and then hitting it with a hammer...takes 2.5 hands.

I would eventually recommend an AR multi-tool that has a spanner wrench for the castle nut. Plus they have barrel nut tools and flash hider wrenches built in. Add a armorer's block and you're ready to tear down or build up to the very last pin. Not really needed unless you want to start rebuilding your upper though.

    Yup yup yup.

The biggest PITA can be the trigger guard pin depending on the manufacturer of your LPK. DPMS kits seem to cause problems with the pin being too tight.

I use the Rainier-modded Magpul guard... no roll pin used:

Never heard of the razor blade trick but that makes a lot of sense, especially when holding in the rear detent spring while spinning on the extension tube.

Definitely possible, but I do bend a spring every once in a while. Will definitely try a blade nex time. A bud just did a build and he tapped that hole for a headless plug screw. Seemed to be pretty easy to do and only cost a $2 tap and 5 cent screw.

    It's handy for the front.

For the rear, I don't dick around.

I tap the hole 2-56, get a 1/4" long 2-56 grub screw (model airplane wheel collars use them)... maybe it's 4-40, it's been a while... but the hole is correct, just need to tap it.
I clip about 4 coils off of the spring.

    Drop in the detent
    Drop in the spring
Thread the grub screw down flush...

I can change any of my buffer tubes without having to worry about chasing a spring across the room.

i put a magpul guard like that on mine, (wasn't button head cap screw, but just a hex-socket set-screw), ...but i stripped the hex-socket, and now can't find another screw that small in H/W stores...

I have the LWRCI trigger guard on my Form 1 lower and it uses a hex screw to set it as well.

Check your local R/C Hobby shop. If no dice there, call up Magpul and they will send you one.

    If all else fails:

HI, I'm looking to buy and AR-15 and I'm deciding between two models. I was hoping to get some honest opinions here. The two that I'm looking at are the Sig Sauer M400 Enhanced ($1060) and the Windham Weaponry Flat top ($799), optics ready model (not sure of #). I like the SS because it comes dressed with Magpul furniture and decent Iron sites, so I won't have to do anything to it for a while. I like the Windham because of the price and the fact I can add anything I want.

Just curious if anyone has owned these weapons or can do a deductive comparison. I will be using it for various varmint hunting and plinking and zombie defense, etc.

    are they both flat-top uppers?

..keep in mind irons will cost you a couple hundred dollars (for a front and rear), so if it comes w/ some decent ones that is a plus!

Yeah, they are both flat tops. I figured with the sights, and magpul furniture, the Sig is a better deal for only $200 more. My buddy just bought the Sig and he's a pretty knowledgeable enthusiast and he loves it. I'll probably go that route.
