    Hi all,

So a few months back, I wanted to fix that god-awful squeak/chirp in the blower motor. I followed the instructions in the DIY, but somehow managed to strip the little screws that hold the metal cap to the housing of the motor. After 20 minutes of cussing myself out and getting claustrophobic under my footbox, I decided to just grab my trusty can of WD-40.

There is a small rectangular hole on the vertical back side of the motor housing where you can stick your finger into and rotate the motor by hand. I decided to run the motor on slow, and spray just a little bit in increments into the spinning blower motor. After spraying for a few seconds, the sound began to fade and oscillate, then I pushed the fan to high, and sprayed a little more...voila! No more chirp. :D

It's been 2 months and 8000 miles, and it's been silent ever since. No need to open the motor up or grease anything, and ESPECIALLY no need to go buy a new one from the stealership or even have them service it...just get that plastic piece out of the way so you can see/reach the motor and spray away.

    Anybody else ever try this?

Why didn't you remove the three 4mm screws that hold the entire motor assembly in the truck and just work on it on a workbench? :p

Sorry, I never have been one to trust WD-40 for a lubrication application. It turns into brown snot over time.

Yep I did it and it lasted just a little over 12,000 miles and came back. Went to the dealer and had another one installed that was a different design and no more chirps.

Didn't have small enough tools to remove them...but this seems to work for now! Went on 2 road trips totaling 2500 miles in desert heat and so far no problems!

My chirping only occurs when the outside temps drop and I need to use heat ... replaced once under warranty ... went well ... cooler temps ... slight noise ... I wait again until fall.

I wouldn't spray WD-40 into an electrical motor... You probably should have used an electrical cleaner.

But yeah, 3 screws and the whole assembly comes out.

Why? The newer blower seems to have eliminated the chirp and you can replace it in 10 minutes with a screwdriver.

Yes but for those who are out of warranty and need to do this, the new motor is way too expensive when there is a fix like this.

I hear you. Personally I didn't want to keep patching the motor so when an improved blower came out I bought one so hopefully I never had to deal with it again. So far so good. :D

I don't think this is a good fix. The other thread that shows how to fix the chirp will explain why. The chirp caused because there are 2 set pins that keep the motor spinning vertically and not binding (the binding or rubbing is what causes the chirp). By removing the assembly and just adjusting the set screws so it doesn't make noise anymore, you eliminate the problem. Applying lubrication to a part that shouldn't be rubbing in the first place is not the proper fix and the problem will come back.

On top of that, you just dumped oil onto an electrical motor. At the very least, for others who want to try this method you should at least use something that's compatible with electrical components.

I totally get it that this was the cop-out way of doing things, but it was getting dark and I was exhausted so I just did it. I'm merely reporting my findings after 2 months.

And the amount of WD-40 we're talking about here is so infantismal, I doubt any of it got into the electrical components.

That's good that you clarified that, cause you know someone would have emptied half a can on theirs and destroyed the motor!

What is infantismal anyways? Is that like the thing-a-mabob?
