Do the monthly 4 wheel drive 10 mile exercise?

Who does the 10 mile monthly exercise of the 4 wheel drive indicated in the manual? Not suppose to engage the drive on dry pavement and that's all I've got.

Supposed to be for the lubing the drive?

 

Once a month on my way to work, Im on the highway about 8 miles. I believe it is to keep the fluid in the front diff moving so it doesnt get stuck .

 

Man I did that the other day and forgot until I was on the freeway going 70.

Gotta remember not to do that.

 

Well, I'm going to have to do this one of these days. Don't take my truck out much.

 

Heheheh. Once a week weather it needs it or not. My boy does his Tundra the same as well as cycling his headlamp adjusters. Like Whip said is mainly to exercise the actuators.

 

I try to do it when the pavement is wet.

I use my 4x4 multiple times during the winter up in the snow but during the dry months I only engage it maybe once... wasn't aware of doing it once a month for 10 miles... I'll have to start doing this... straight road of course lol

 

I've done it on my '07 4Runner almost every month since it was new and haven't had any problems, but I've yet to do it on my '12 Taco due to all of the differing opinions out there. I've only had it a few months but I'll probably start doing it soon.

 

Just did it this morning on my way home from bLowes. Took a 'shortcut' by turning off the highway and bombing up over the mountain. I'm usually in the dirt enough to not have to worry about this, but for a number of reasons, I haven't been OR this month.

Not sure what you mean by 'differing opinions' because this is Toyota's opinion from the owner's manual. At least it's in my '11 OM anyway.

 

There isn't a maximum speed, is there? I ask, because the only road that's nice and straight is 80 km/hr. I did it one day, then remember I had to go somewhere else, forgot I was in 4lo, and turned onto another road. It'd really take multiple turns to hurt it, would it not?

I do it once or twice a month but it's easy to do around here...hundreds of miles of dirt roads in every direction.

 

Isn't a spool diff pretty common in racing circles?
