I received the exact same email for an item I had listed on Craigslist last year. It was a small item so when I got to the part about him sending a private mover to pick it up, I knew it was a scam. Just ignore it.

Yeah I just got this text about a car that I am selling.

"Thanks for the quick reply I'm interested to buy this as a Birthday gift for my Son, I'm not home at this time as a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work locations and stations, phone calls hardly go through I would have love to call you but call is restricted here but I will have my shipper over there to get things work out perfectly I want you assure me it's in condition described."

"Due to my present location, my choices are limited and I do not have much access to my phone facilities as i would have called to iron out issue reason been that i am of the busy type. I am an honorable man and you will recieve your money cash in hand before this is picked up. However, it's easy and free to open a paypal account. Just go to there website www.paypal.com and sign up a personal account."

    What a bunch of crap

I have worked at a bank and caught a few of these "bank certified cheques" (call them bank drafts here) They're actually quite similar to the real thing, they're hoping you cash it and no one catches it, by the time it bounces back your vehicle has been picked up.

Like was said before, deal in cash its a scam

Okay, guys. For my own edification, please tell me how this is a scam. As a person long associated with the military (civilian employee), I have found myself in this very situation (away from home, forced to do business remotely) many, many times. This involved payment by check or money order, with arrangements for another (shipping company, relative, etc) to pick up the item. I've also agreed to pay a bit more for the hassle. In no way, shape, or form did this ever involve a scam.

Many people cannot so easliy get away from their work. For example, a person running a small business where he alone is the sole employee or worker. And, of course, as mentioned above, there's the two or so million military-related personnel (overseas, in remote areas, etc). So, while this might be a scam, the fact that he can't so easily visit to look at the item doesn't necessarily prove that.

As for the name, address, and phone number, you'll have to provide that for him to see the item in the first place. How else is he going to find your house? As for the check, I'd simply specify it must clear the bank before pickup. If it's certified, the bank will verify that and cannot hold you responsible. Or, if you just don't want a check, setup a PayPal account. Anyway, once you have the money, why would you even care how the item is picked up?

All they need is one person out of thousands to bite, and they've made their money. I always respond, "sorry, just sold" I don't need a scammer to target my email address.

I would never follow up with anyone who says "I will buy the item." It's generic for a reason. If you don't reference what I'm selling, I assume you're a scammer.

Same for emails that are simply "you still have this?" If you're not emailing me to either ask specific questions about it, ask to see it or tell me you'll buy it, I'll assume you're an idiot and you'll be ignored. I probably miss out on some sales but it's worth it to me to skim off the tire kickers.
