    Wanted to get your opinions on engine air filters for the 4.0. I will not use Fram oil filters, period. I have never had any problems with Fram air filters though, but I don't know how they compare to OEM. Anyone have any opinions?

    OEM if you live in a dusty environment, and AFE Pro Dry if you dont.

    What's the deal with AFE's in the dust? Are they oiled like K&N's? I've put K&N's in everything I've owned for years, but now I live where it doesn't get any dustier. :tumbleweed:

    whatever you do i would shy away from any oiled filter. i had a k&n intake in my chevy and after a couple years of suckin up that oil would throw random maf codes. easy fix to just clean but annoying as hell. i hate cels

    Filters without oil will not catch as many dust particles are ones with so for dusty conditions oiled are better. I live in the desert and run an oil free filter, I make sure I keep up with oil changes (more frequent if I happen to off-road more for that period of time) and make sure that I tap out the filter more frequently. So far I do not really see a "collection" of dust past my air filter whether it be in the factory box or intake tubing.

    you could just not over oil it and the CEL would not be an issue. Many many people run oiled without an issue, less is more sometimes.

    An oiled filter is better than a dry filter. As long as you dont over oil it you will be fine.

    Not sure where you got that info, but every oil sample I have done with an oiled filter vs. non oiled, has shown much more dirt in the oil with the oiled filter, than when running the dry filter.

    yea im just speaking from my experience folks, and oiling a filter isnt out of my realm, but i understand why that must be stated.

    im pretty happy with the stock system on this truck. i honestly dont plan on changing it. ran paper with my 22re, mostly fram (i know, I know, well maybe i dont) and maintained a spotless intake tube, and run the same with this truck. toyota has some pretty good engineers, consider their budget for r&d, the demand for longevity, and for fuel mileage and the entire truck makes sense. unless you want to hear a good womp under your hood when you mash throttle, stick to stock

    Oiled filters are for 2 stroke dirt bikes not trucks.

    utard=nailed it.

    i will admit my focus has an aftermarket intake with foam filter (i dunno ask the p.o.) that i use k&n oil on to give it a light tack (foam filter oil, like for a dirtbike seems like it would be a bit much) and runs without codes, but does run really funky sometimes. ah hell maybe its that blue oval on the front

    Fully agree with your statement, but be sure to qualify it with the fact that you are talking about oiled cotton gauze filters (K&N) vs. something like an oiled foam filter. Oiled foam has different flow vs. filter capability then oiled cotton gauze.

    Another vote for the AFE Pro Dry. I've noticed no dust getting by mine. Knock it out, vacuum it out or wash with soap and water when it gets dirty. I've had mine for almost 60,000 miles and love it.

    Damn, how do you get 2 in thereCraig? LOL

    Yeah I scrapped my K&N recently and went back to a standard type filter. Fram currently, but planning to pick up a OEM next.
