Hey guys in this day and age it can't be too crazy to assume somebody has to have invented and app for Iphone/Ipad that allows it to be used as an offroad GPS. I'm not saying upload race maps (that would be cool) but maybe just track my speed and trails I took to find my way back to camp in middle of the night. I'm sure somebody has this

Post up what you have! Free is better!

Indeed it is something I can build, but I am almost positive I have seen an app that already does this. A plus about GPS is it doesn't require any cell connectivity so it should work regardless of where you're at. I'm sure someone knows of an app. My friend I think showed me one, I'll text him and ask

MotionX GPS is one I like .. its not free, but the only cheap option for good offline maps (able to read maps with no cell signal, just GPS)

I use it Ocotillo, and for the whole Spring trip through Mojave.
It works wonderfully on just GPS, but be careful as it will drain the battery with constant use.

I use GPS Kit on my iphone to:
    - Upload race files
    - Upload trails and waypoint I create on Google Earth
    - Track myself off roading
    - Everything that my Lowrance does and more
    - Use without any cell phone reception, only GPS reception

Only cost me $10 from App Store and I havent touched my Lowrance since

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but we just made an Off-Road GPS App geared towards the off-road community. Just in case anyone is still interested. TrailConnect Off-Road GPS, and it's FREE!

MotionX is pretty good, but if you are out of cell range or do not have a 3G enabled iPad you will have to download the maps prior to rolling out.

I've been using LeadNav on my iPad and 5s for a few months now and its pretty legit but can get expensive and use a lot of memory if you start downloading maps. My Lowrance is still my primary, I just picked up an HDS7m Touch to replace my HDS-5m so I will have one available for anyone in the market. The 5" HDS has been discontinued by Lowrance too

I've been beta testing with LeadNav since they came out and its been a good experience, I like it much better now that I have the bigger iphone 6 screen over the iphone 5. I load up maps from www.californiatrailmap.com since it has the most comprehensive trail maps for southern and central CA. Their maps can be loaded on ios, android, Garmin and Lowrance hardware.

Try backcountry navigator for Android. It's what I use and it's great. You can download free topos of use in areas with no cell reception. Works great for 4wheeling or backpacking. I've got it running on an old android that I have a bunch of extra batteries for.
