Tried to trade in the Taco today (on a Jetta Diesel), had a preferred
supplier discount voucher, supposed to get it for invoice less $500.
Did the research on trade values, invoice prices etc. last night.
Started out, they wanted to know the payoff on the Tacoma.
Told the sales guy it didn't matter what I owed, it had no bearing on
price I expected to get from them... had to bring in the sales manager
at that point to help him, I stood my ground. They don't like working
in the dark. :D So, he came back with a price on the Jetta, invoice I
pulled off the net was about 23,200, he said after taking off the 500.00
he could sell it to me for 23,700. I think he pushed + instead of -
When I called him on it, he said "you can't trust the internet invoices,
    they are out of date"
Offered me 22,000 for the Toyota, told him I had NADA and KBB trade in
values, he said they don't use NADA... fine, they are pretty close, use
KBB... he left, came back and said they called local Toyota dealer and
were told they wouldn't pay more than 21,000 for it, so they were
already over what they should be paying. Told them goodbye, went a
couple of mile down the road, and the phone rang, offered me another
$500. I told them that we both had a copy of the Rosetta Stone, but
we still weren't speaking the same language. I guess I'll just stick to
selling it myself, and then do an online purchase so I don't have to deal
with these idiots. Man, I hate dealerships!

Only problem I see with your entire post is your attempting to trade your Tacoma on a VW?!?!?!

    Anyone else see that?

    Im with u!

    Dealers are stealers!
They have to make alot of money to cover overhead and make a profit. You are always better off selling it on your own and then taking what the dealer is willing to take for trade in. I do love to negotiate and f with their minds. I never buy a car from a dealership with out walking and then having them sweeten the deal.

As far as trading in the tacoma for a volswagon. and it's his and it's his loss On this forum you can't hardly trade in your tacoma for anything without catching shit.

Don't really need the truck, got the Jeep for offroad, Wife has Tahoe for towing... gonna get an old beater for when I really HAVE to use a truck,
and I'll get more than twice the MPGs with the Jetta over the Tacoma.
I knew I'd get some grief, some joking, some not, never really cared
much about others opinions though (unless they matched mine) :D

You're not going to come ahead to when it comes to your Tacoma, especially when you owe. They aren't going to bite the bullet on what you still owe on it. The salesperson wanted to know because they were going to try to find anyway possible not to eat the cost, including trying to put it on the VW.
I had traded my 2010 VW Golf 2.5 in for my Tacoma(2011). I had owed 20k on it from the finance. The dealership "appraised" it at 16k. I was upside down 4g's. I told the saleman that I wasn't eating the 4gs from the VW. I told him that I wanted to be free and clear from the vehicle. So work it for over 2 hours, he got me to 1g from the VW which I was okay with. In the end I got my Tacoma. It only took an hour test drive and over 2 hours of numbers with the salesman, kept the dealership opened til 10:15 pm.
So for everyone who is dealing with dealerships you're going to have to work them. Stand your ground and don't take any shit. If it takes you 6 months to get that VW and the deal you want, do it. Get the deal you want

Maybe I'm failing to see something here... They offered you 22k for a 2009 Tacoma and wanted to sell you a brand new TDI for 23.7k? I don't know about the price on the VW, but that's not terrible for a trade in value on a Tacoma, especially when you're not trading it to a Toyota dealership or against another Toyota vehicle. They'll probably slap a sticker price on it of 25k and hope they get 24.5k out of it. I don't know the condition of your Tacoma or the mileage but at face value nothing seemed outrageous.

Not outrageous, but not doing what they are supposed to, especially on the new
price. They aren't supposed to raise the price on the preferred supplier list.
I knew they'd try to get me on the trade... I'm not desperate, nothing wrong really
with truck, other than very minor ding or 2, I'll drive it for another year or 2 before
    I give it away.

I've had the same issue before about the pay off and had the same type of response. They are going to give what they are going to give regardless. Just tell me what you're willing to give, I already know what the sales price is on the new car, or at least what I'm willing to give anyway, so why play games?

But I know the game, the longer they keep you in there the more likely you will buy. I have dealt with some dealers in the past that didn't play around, they gave me what I thought was a fair deal w/o the games which means a lot to me. Unfortunately none of which are Toyota dealers. :(

I know what I want, no need to play games to get there. Either we can work a deal or save both our time.

I agree. It sounds like the biggest beef here is you don't feel like they are giving you the correct incentive price for a supplier. Tier one supplier or no? If so I would call them on it as they are supposed to show you the "REAL INVOICE " not the one they flash to regular customers.

I work for a Tier 1 supplier and when we purchase you will know the price before you even go to a dealer. I just wish we had a supplier deal with Toyota.

After some more checking, it seems that the price on the Jetta may be right.....
destination charges were not listed on the invoice I downloaded.....
So, I eat 1500 and get it, or sell it outright and go back to the dealer.
Confucius says, "sign of a fair deal is everyone walks away mad"
I think I'll start listing it locally

Dont forget you only pay difference in sales tax which might close up the $1500 gap. Sounds like decent deal i like the diesel sportwagon myself

If you have the time to deal with selling it yourself, you will make more money off of it. The dealership is giving you a value based on a calculated risk because they still need to resell it for a profit. Good luck to you!

Okay, I am going to take a stab of being the voice of reason here. Why do a lot of people feel as though all dealerships are thieves? That their only purpose in life is to sink a lot of $$$ into a business with the only thing in mind is to rob you blind.

It is called free enterprise folks ... it is not their plan to lose money at every turn.

I have read complaints that John Doe traded in his '06 Tacoma for $XXX and was pissed when he drove by the lot the next week and there was a price tag of $XXXX on "his" truck. He feels as if he got ripped off.

Give running a business a try ... losing $$$ on every sale ... and see how long you stay in business ... stepping down off my soapbox.
