Yeah it is not like world wars, horrible natural disasters, massive power outages, and out right civilizational collapses have never ever happened in history before.

    • VERY TRUE ^^^^ After living through Hurricane Katrina and losing everything but what I was able to bring which was not much because I was driving a convertible mustang, I now have a whole new mind set. I'm sure like most people here do not think there will be a zombie outbreak but I figured If you can survive a zombie apocalypse, you can survive anything. We like to joke about the Zombie apocalypse but the "zombies" could be the people that want your food or water during disaster. Like what we saw during Katrina. Something like a major earthquake could make things a real mess where you live and you may not be able to go to the store or even get home if the roads or bridges are blocked or damaged. After Katrina there was no power, no running water that was drinkable, no gas, and IF a store was open there was not much on the shelf and you had better have cash. Also there was NO CELL PHONES. The entire 504 area code was down. When I was in another state I could make a call and send and receive text messages but I rarely was able to received a call on the phone. Verizon was the 1st to get service back but it took a long time. Don't think it won't ever happen to you because you never know. I hope no one goes through that but like what we just saw in Florida with all the flooding and the drought in other states you never know what may happen. Also with everything going on in the world I think it's a matter of time that the mess in Europe will spill over here.

In the book, that village is actually settled by humans who have been infected by the disease but have found a treatment to prevent them from turning fully into vampires. (yes in the book they are vampires) The main character is actually kipnapped by the vampire people and executed by them in the city because he is the last human on earth and they view him as a threat. That is where the title I am Legend comes from. He is the last surviving human on earth.

the only good thing about maglights is that they use normal batteries

a keep a 3d cell led maglight in the driver side door cup holder. if anything it can be used as a club

Something that I've noticed missing here are carbide lamps and lanterns. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to maintain, and work quite well. I've used a form of carbide lamp for light, heat, minimal cooking, and even breadcrumbing, or marking waypoints with the soot it puts off. You can find many different types but most available will be cap, or helmet lamps that attach to a mount on a helmet or in some cases even a ballcap. I've even seen bicycle handlebar mounts for them. I've used all sorts from vintage brass, modern brass reproductions - some better, some worse - and even the Petzl Aceto series which I still treasure but fear is no longer in production.

Calcium carbide is fairly easy to lay hands on - I usually order in bulk from Karst Sports since we've been doing business with them since the mid 1990's and have never had a bad transaction. You can find new production lamps for sale and many seem to be the Indian produced J.K. Dey brand which have a solid reputation for being well made and affordable. Most Amish supply places such as Lehman's offer them as well as caving supply houses. Another form of carbide lamp is the sight smoker, or carbide candle such as the Ray-Vin super smoker which while intended to used as an iron sight soot tool works well as a very small and efficient carbide candle. Do keep in mind that the Ray-Vin and other sight smokers are designed to make lots of soot and usually more of a yellow-orange colored light versus the whiter light emitted from most lamps which don't create as much soot and usually have a reflector that helps maximize the usable light that the unit creates.

Ignoring the sleep inducing tone of the narrators voice you can see how the Ray-Vin unit works with this video.

    http://youtu.be/rXF0u8OrLdU

And now that you've seen how easy it is to prepare, use, and service one you can see why you may want to consider a carbide lamp or candle to keep and use.

Hope that you find what works best for you. I started using the lamps when I was young as quite a few of my family members mined and they were just part of the everyday tools that miners used. I had seen heaps of headlamps, supervisor lanterns, and even a table lantern or two before a competition shooting friend of mine showed me his ill-performing sight smoker that I immediately sorted out for him once I realized that it was in fact a simple carbide candle.

I've got a couple of the old Coleman white gas lanterns and a couple of the multi-fuel BriteLyt lanterns as well but more often than not I find that I don't actually need that much light and the old carbides work fine.
