FWIW .. tell the Toyota service writer that you will wait for an available good tech to do the work ... this has worked for me.

Service writers know which techs are good and which one are not.

landphil, maybe I'm wrong, but I think you may be looking at the wrong spot. I see the thin line of rust I believe you're referring to. However, I think the issue is what appears to be a gaping crack just to the right of that, where the shaft passes through the carrier.

So, the dealership knowingly sold you a vehicle with a bad drive shaft? That's bait and switch!

    Yeah.
OP: Get the current dealer to show you EXACTLY what they are talking about with your truck on a lift, both brakes and driveshaft. They should be able to show you what they are planning to do. Then take it back to the original dealer and show them, and let them know that you strongly feel that their inspection should have caught those items. Take their inspection checklist back with you. Then go from there. Escalate through their management chain until you get an answer you can live with.

The problem with non-certified used cars is that once you drive it away, the problems are yours regardless of their inspection checklist. Sure, it may be bad for the dealer's reputation, but used car salesmen live in the moment and don't really care. Maybe this one will care, or maybe they will tell you tough luck.

Extended warranties are a safety net for catastrophic issues, but even then they will find a way to wiggle out of much of the costs. I bought one on my '92 pickup and had a claim for the radiator due to the top tank separating at the seam. Warranty paid for a refurbished radiator, but not hoses, thermostat, or belt replacement (coolant got on the belts and they made a lot of noise). What I paid in labor negated the cost of the refurbished radiator -- I could have done it cheaper myself with a new radiator, which is exactly what I had to do a couple years later when the "refurbished" radiator sprung a pinhole leak where it had been dented and painted over.

Anyway, good luck, OP, hope you get it figured out.

After looking at the pic again, I do beleive you are correct. It is a bit hard to see exactly what is going on from the photo, but it makes more sense now why they are changing it.

Damage caused by modifications (and also abuse) is not covered by any warranty, plain and very simple.

his point is that via the magnusson moss act, the dealer has to provide proof that your lift/tires/whatever directly contributed to the issue. they cant blow you off just b/c you have a lift or tires or whatever.

Thats why one day Toyota will try to shutdown TacomaWorld website. Just think about all the money Toyota dealers lose because people do their own work.

... ^^^ ... I disagree ... our conversations sell a lot of Tacomas here ... especially with all the good words about them.

It is just certain dealers and/or regions that may not be happy with our (saving money) conversations. ...

    But ... we ALL love Toyota . . . :D . . . { singing the Toyota song . la . la . la . } . . . :D

Ok guys, the truck is back at the dealership I bought it from and they gave me a dc tundra rental. I haven't gotten any word from them yet about what they think is wrong or how long it is going to take. I hope they don't try to pull a negligance stance. I don't think they will though.
And for the record let it be known. I LOVE MY TRUCK AND I LIKE TOYOTA AS A COMPANY. I realize that stuff slips through the cracks. It just depends on how they treat it from here.

That is exactly what I said.

But simply installing a lift or mods will not void the warranty on the vehicle.

I understand that. Friends who are attorneys tell me that in almost every case the court system sides with the manufacturer over the consumer (imagine that?). Knowing that fact sent me to arbitration rather than to court in a lemon law case a few years back.

there was just a court case where a guy got $619k for a lemon law case against Mercedes. anything is possible. if you stand your ground with a dealer and/or Toyota HQ, you have a good chance.

Lemon law cases always go to arbitration before going to court.

My buddy got Jeep to buy his Cherokee back. Ended up costing him only $2000 per year he owned it (they paid him out cash $6000 less than he paid for it) and he took that cash and bought an '03 4-Runner.

Had he agreed to accept another Jeep, they would have given him full NEW value... basically a trade from his '99 for a new '03.
