i have since summed it up to the truck having a horrible clutch and learned to deal with it. every manual i have ever owned has taken a few days to get used to some a week or two they are all different. this one took me months i just found that to be strange.

i plan on bringing it to a dealer that has knowledgable service writers and techs and a service dept. that actually gives a flying fuck :) if i find out anything tacoma world will be the first place i post the info but, don't hold your breath lol

im unsure about the 4 cyl. but the 6 is hard sleeves cast into the aluminum block. with the 6 they are spaced incredibly close together, making the sleeves incredibly thin. i would imagine a similar setup with the 4 cyl. but dont take my word for it

he means that the cast iron sleeves in the cylinder boars cannot be upped to larger piston size, so since its a 4000cc (4.0L) engine now, it will always be... sleeved blocks cannot be upsized or "machined" in this case

i shift mine higher when going from 1st to 2nd higher rpms than any of the other gears thats how i have dealt with it. my issue isn't really with that aspect of the trans as it is a truck not a sports car. my issue has been with the chatter i get at stop lights its not the engine mind you its that throw out bearing noise.

this and the fact that when at a complete stop i put the truck into 1st and go to take off and sometimes she flat out has a jittery take off and its not my fault sometimes the truck almost stalls my passengers don't realize it as i do drive it smoothly its just not easy to do i guess and requires 100% of my attention at all times.

Wow, thanks for all the responses. I figured I would get 'search NOOB' or 'These transmissions shift rough', I appreciate everyone listening to my greater concerns about the cracking noise and lockout from gears. Eco, great post - very helpful.

I had thought of throwing in to my first post 'I notice this less noise and resistance when I shift at 3,000+ rpms from first to second' but thought it might be all in my head, or that the noise at least was lessened by the louder engine at 3k.

So, I spose what I'll do is either shift higher in the power band or plan on waiting for the syncros and never force it. It's funny, you try to baby any new car for the fact that you just jumped in to enormous debt AND want to break it in without beating the piss out of it, AND want to see what your fuel economy is looking like during the break-in process. All this just causes confusion when your best efforts to take care of something are making it run like crapola.

Again, thanks all. Hope this turns up in a search for people in the same boat in the future.

At 1400 miles, if you're hearing loud clunks and cracks, and it's hard getting into gear, I'd be headed for the dealer.

Gears are fine. Mine makes sounds when I shift next to a wall or car. I personally dont mind it at all. I wouldnt put new exhaust on a 2tr since it needs the backpressure of a smaller pipe. Plus the sound of a 4 banger trying to get up the mountain with a 3inch pipe is just obnoxious just to maintain speed.

All in all, the next tacoma I buy will be a v6 6 speed :D

Significantly better when shifting at higher rpms. Much easier to shift in to second and third. Clunk going in to second still most of the time, but certainly not the crack noise I was hearing. Glad I learned this as soon as I did. I feel like with a little practice shifting at these rpms I can make the clunk a seldom occurrence.

What ~rpm do you guys cruise at, like around town for instance? It's so flat here that I really don't need to ride in the higher rpms, but riding at less than 2k rpm is kind of foreign to me.

Still trying to figure this thing out on the interstate though, there are several 1-2 mile long inclines that I hit every day on the way to and from work. Speed limit is 75 and it seems like if you're in the slow lane you're behind all the semis doing 60mph, or being pressured to go 90 in the fast lane  If I'm approaching a hill I've learned to just gun it up to ~85 and if I stay in 5th I can reach the top without having dipped below 75. However... if anyone gets in front of me and I drop to like 80 I'll be reaching the top of the hill at 60 and receiving many a middle finger. When I hop in to 4th as I'm losing steam near the top then I can pull it off.. seems like there's minimal difference between 4th and 5th at these speeds though, rpms do not rise significantly at all when enter 4th @ 70-75.

Hour, around town I cruise around 2K-2500 RPM . never below 2,000 , it just lugs the engine . It really is just a big learning curve. 1st to 2nd is the worst but i can shift real smooth by just revving high. When I'm on a decent hill in 5th, I'll downshift to 4th. 5th gear is no good for hills, but great on flat land.
