I am eating my words right now. I pulled the truck to a flat place in the alley to change my oil. La-De-Da-De-Da. All going as usual. Here comes the gabby neighbor, get to chatting, starts poking around and asking questions about the "Yota". Distracting me from my normal routine and upon opening the 5qt jug and pouring the entire 5 qts into the fill tube, I hear something running. Phone call to wifey, Me: Baby, sweetie, hunny, I love you.
    Wife: What do you want?
Me: I'm a reTARD, run to Walmart and get me a 5 qt jug of Mobil 1 5w30 please. Thank you sweetie.

    Nuf said?

Currently waiting for her to return with my oil. At least the truck got a $26.96 oil flush.

Do you know how many dinosaurs died to fill that 5 qt jug that you just wasted?

Forgot to close up the drain plug? Good thing you're not in Cali...my neighbors would barricade my house with their Priuses and throw organic free range eggs at my truck, then call the cops.

Never done that one, but I can imagine it happens more than you'd think. LOL

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
I know someone who started his truck with the filler cap off. There were three of us standing there wondering why it sounded like it was raining.

That's nothing, a buddy of mine drove his jeep about 20 miles with the cap off...unbelievably the cap was still sitting on the washer fluid tank (or somewhere around there) and hadn't fallen off during the drive.

Father In Law did the same about 10 years ago checked oil before a road trip about 1 hour into the trip they smelled burning oil and stopped to check. The oil cap off but still under the hood.

The truck still runs great and has a ton of miles on it (99 tacoma 4cyl)

Luckily for a friend of mine I happened by while he was filling his after a change. He started the engine when I heard a gurgling sound and looked under the truck. Oil was pouring from the filter. Turned out the seal had slipped out of place when he tightened the filter. He had no idea and who knows how long it would have took before he realized. He was still sitting in the truck when I yelled to shut it off.

Too much to list, but enough to get me in trouble. Repeatedly.
Me: Fill it with the DP out. Once. Volvo.
Me: Started it with the cap off. Once. Volvo.
Me: Found out the hard way the old OF gasket stayed on the block and didn't come off with the filter. Once. Mustang.
Dude I worked with at Jiffy Jube a LONG time ago (THIS is the be-all-end-all derp moment of the world!): Ford Expedition comes in for its first-ever oil change. Drop the DP, OF. Replace DP, OF. Stick oil gun into filler neck, lock the trigger. Three minutes later, only reading "4" on the gun's digital gauge. Two minutes later, gun's digital gauge finally reads "6" (at that time, the Expedition took 6 quarts). Replace the cap, start it up. The thing bucks and kicks and chugs like it's possessed, so dude gives it a couple of mild revs...which makes it buck and kick even more. Cut the engine, check the stick. Nothing. Check it again. Manager checks it. Three times. Nothing. Checks the DP, OF -- both present, installed correctly. Checks the whole thing out. Can't find anything wrong. Asks dude which gun he used; "uh, the Castrol 10/30." Manager: "How many quarts?" Dude: "Six." After much thought, manager says: "What did the display on the gun read?" Dude: "Six." Manager: "Oh. Shit. We just bought an engine."

Everyone but the dude knew that the Castrol 10/30 gun read in gallons, not quarts. Six GALLONS in a brand spankin' new V8. None of us could figure out how it was still running after we bent all eight connecting rods.

Why did the stick give no reading when it was checked? No one considered the possibility that it was completely submerged, and looked like it was empty.

I did that once with a cummins N14 truck engine. Oil capacity is 40 litres, the gun was locked on, and got to 20 litres before I realized I had forgot to reinstall the plug. The drain tub was still underneath, but had overflowed by about 5 litres. Thank goodness for floor dry...

    Thanks man, I needed a good laugh...haha.

GF's car back from dealer service, they left the filler cap off...

She drives it home and didn't notice anything.
The next day we're going to the store and i notice the smell
right away. We stop and i pop the hood and oil is everywhere...
filler cap is still on the battery, amazingly.

We get the car home and i check the levels, add the amount
needed and no issues...it was only about a quart low btw.
Always check somebody else's work and double check my own work.

and OP, i did the same thing with my old Nissan D21...but only
one quart. Glad the drain pan was still under there, because
i heard the oil splashing in the pan and i had no distractions...
stuff happens...drain plug was in the rag in my pocket.

Did that at Ford once, was working on a Diesel 6.0 drained it, lowered it, and then added 15 qts (yes 15 qts), then walked away. It takes a while for the thick oil to drain to the bottom and in the shop its loud, so I didn't hear or see nothing. So when I came back the Tranny guys two stalls down weren't too happy with me.

I was paying attention the last time I changed my oil and because I did it in the dark with a headlamp and shop light, I discovered that if you look inside the oil-fill spout on the V6 engine, while the oil is out, you will get to see how shiny and beautiful the timing chain is or hopefully is. :D

I stuck a new oil filter on while the gasket from the old filter was still stuck on my F150. When I started the truck, oil spewed everywhere.
